"One of the most singular, majestic Condrieu I’ve ever tasted" Jeb Dunnock

100 point perfection from the critics doesn't come along very often - and when it does it often has a price tag in the many hundreds of pounds.

So when we read Jeb Dunnock's 100pt review of the 2015 Condrieu Coteau de Vernon from Domaine Georges Vernay, acknowledged masters of the style, we moved heaven and earth to try and get hold of some.

Given the tiny amounts produced and the huge demand, we were ecstatic to get hold of just a few cases to offer to Vivino customers!

Coteau de Vernon is the flagship wine of the Domaine, created from 50-70 year old vines planted in a steeply-terraced, single vineyard in the centre of the appellation -  a vineyard widely held to produce the finest Condrieu.

This is certainly true in the excellent 2015 vintage. The 2015 Coteau de Vernon is probably the best Condrieu of the year and possibly one of the greatest ever made.

Unquestionably one of France's (and the world's) greatest white wines, this should not be missed!

About the wine

Vernay's flagship Coteaux du Vernon is always in the top 2 or 3 wines of the vintage, but in 2015 they have produced a magnificent, delicate yet powerful wine that will be tough to beat as the best Condrieu of the year - and perhaps the best for some years.

The wine has a heady, aromatic nose with complex stone fruit aromas of peaches, dried apricots and a hint of spice and floral notes. On the palate it is rich and concentrated whilst remaining incredibly pure, silky and elegant. It has a sense of energy and power that continues throughout the incredibly long, mineral finish that is almost saline in its intensity. This is quite some wine - undoubtedly one of France's finest!

Before his death last year at the age of 91, Georges Vernay was known as the 'Pope of Condrieu'. He was responsible for almost single-handedly saving the Condrieu appellation from extinction in the 1960s when there were just 6 hectares of the grape left, believed to have been the only commercially planted Viognier in the world at that point.

Georges' passion and skill for Viognier transformed Condrieu into one of France's best white wines and an appellation with a worldwide reputation.

Since 1996, the Domaine has been run by George's daughter with the same intense passion and belief and the wines are uniformly excellent and highly sought-after.

2015 was a warm vintage and the grapes reached perfect maturity -  a vintage in high demand due to the elegant, mineral wines it produced.

The grapes were manually harvested at full maturity before being meticulously sorted and pressed. After a static temperature-controlled must settling, the clear juice was fermented in 225 litre barrels, lasting approximately four to five weeks. The wine was matured on its fine lees in oak barrels (25% of which were new) for 12 to 18 months with regular bâtonnage (stirring of the lees) to add texture and complexity.

About the vineyard

Coteau de Vernon is a vineyard at the very heart of Condrieu, two hectares of South to South-East facing vineyards located on steep granite terraces.

The terraces are so steep that the use of machines is impossible; therefore the vineyard is maintained manually and without the use of weed killers or insecticides.

The vines are aged between 50 and 70 years, are planted at density of 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare and yield just 25 hectolitres per hectare.

100 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
"
One of the most singular, majestic Condrieu I’ve ever tasted is the 2015 Condrieu Coteau De Vernon. I wish I could pour a taste of this heavenly wine for every reader. White peach, white flowers, hints of citrus oil, and subtle minerality all flow to a thrilling pure, elegant, yet powerful wine that could only come from this incredible terroir. Long and silky, with nothing out of place, it's as good as Condrieu gets."

96 Points - Josh Raynolds
"
Limpid gold. Penetrating aromas of ripe citrus and pit fruits, violet and honey are joined by suggestions of chalky minerals and ginger. Juicy and deeply concentrated on the palate, offering expansive pear nectar, Meyer lemon and floral flavors that show superb clarity and mineral drive. There's a wonderful blend of richness and energy here, and I can find no rough edges. The mineral and floral notes carry strongly through the strikingly long, incisive, seamless finish, which hangs on with outstanding focus and tenacity."

95 Points - James Suckling
"
The oldest vineyard of viognier in existence, the oldest is 1936 (before the appellation), another parcel in 1960. Super chalky, spicy and fragrant with dried white flowers and light honey. The oak is very well integrated. The palate has powerful presence and immense weight with phenolics, mineral saltiness, and long, pure apricot fruit."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
