Created by genius winemaker Peter Sisseck, responsible for one of Spain's greatest wines, Pingus (which sells for upwards of £500 per bottle!), Quinta Sardonia is rapidly establishing a name for itself as one of Spain's top wineries.

Sardón is designed as an introduction to this cult estate, a wine that shows off all the skill of its makers, whilst at the same time being immediately accessible and above all, enjoyable!

At £16.49, it is excellent value for money - full of fresh, ripe, juicy fruit, great concentration and a lovely smoothness that makes it very drinkable.

Situated just a couple of kilometres outside the Ribera del Duero appellation, the wines are labelled Vino de la Tierra de Castille y León, essentially a 'country wine' designation.

But there's nothing plain or rustic about Quinta Sardonia, the winemaker is ex-Pingus, the blend is Tempranillo taken from the Pingus vineyards along with 8 other varieties for complexity (even including a white grape, Albilla!) and the vineyards have all been biodynamic since they were planted in 1998.

 About the wine

2014 is the first vintage of Sardón, using juice which was previously sold after blending the 2 flagship wines. Intended to be an affordable, immediately accessible wine from a cult producer, the Sardón is extremely aromatic, with notes of blueberry, cherry and herbs. On the palate it is rich and full with spicy black fruit, great concentration and silky smooth tannins. A lovely wine and one that demonstrates all the wine-making skill of its extremely talented maker.

There are 37 acres of vines at Quinta Sardonia, located in Sardón del Duero, which are planted with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Albillo and Malbec. All the varietals are vinified separately and are aged for an average of 12 months in a complex combination of twice-used French oak, large foudres, concrete eggs and stainless steel before being blended and bottled with only a light filtering

About the winery

Quinta Sardonia was set up at the turn of the century by Peter Sisseck and Jerome Bougnard who had worked together at Dominio del Pingus, establishing it as one of Spain’s ultra-desirable cult wineries. Farmed biodynamically using local Tempranillo taken from Pingus as well as a selection of French varietals, they produce astonishingly gorgeous wines from just outside the Ribera del Duero appellation.

About the vineyard

The Quinta Sardonia estate is situated on a steep ridge at a height of about 850 metres. There  are 37 acres of vines, most of which are south-facing with a few north-facing. Five distinct micro-climatres have been recorded

Sardonia's vineyards are planeted on three basic soil profiles – gypsum (marl), loam and limestone, with a number of variants thereof, 18 distinct soil profiles in total. The estate was planted in 1998 with the local clone of Tempranillo from the Pingus vineyards, alongside significant portions of French varietals.

90 Points - Luis Gutierrez
"There is a new red, the 2014 Sardón, a blend of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), Garnacha and Albillo, with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec that matured in a combination of barriques, foudres, egg-shaped cement vats and stainless steel tanks. The wine rotates between the different vessels and all the wine has some contact with oak, but the barrels are never new, and are quite neutral...this is very perfumed, with aromas of violets and other flowers, with little influence from the oak. The wines from the property are always quite ripe and achieve a high alcoholic degree, so the thing here is to find balance. This is quite open and a little heady, with a polished palate, very refined tannins and clean flavors. This has similarities with the QS2 from this same vintage. It's a pretty good value, quite serious for an entry level. "

90 Points - Guia Penin
“Colour:deep cherry, purple rim. Nose: balsamic herbs, ripe fruit, cocoa bean, scrubland. Palate: flavourful, powerful, spicey, round tannins.”

"...The wine is deep ruby red with great legs. Aromas of stoned fruit, blackcurrants and vanilla. In the mouth it is round, deliciously fruity and all those aromas are there in volumes. This wine is excellent value" 5/5 Stars

"Really a wine to be enjoyed. Power, spices, alcohol (in a good way), sweetness" 4/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
