One of Portugal's most esteemed Port houses, Ramos Pinto have always been ahead of the game, innovating where others were content with the status quo.

So when it comes to still wines, it's no surprise to find that they have been making them since 1990 - well ahead of the rest of the pack - and extremely well placed to take advantage when the rest of the world cottoned onto just how good these wines can be!

That history has allowed them to perfect their wines and they are now making superb reds that embody that elusive combination of serious value for money and excellent quality.

Made from two old single vineyards - one hot and dry to give the wine richness and power, one cooler and at high altitiude to lend freshness and vibrancy - the Duas Quintas Tinto is a triumph of Portuguese wine-making.

Floral, spicy, energetic and deliciously easy-drinking, the Duas Quintas Tinto is quite frankly incredible value at just £12.39 a bottle!

About the wine

A dense, dark red colour with vivid ruby reflections, the Duas Quintas 2015 has an intense, perfumed bouquet with floral aromas of plum, black cherry and a touch of earthiness. As the wine opens with air, the aroma becomes more complex with notes of spice and wood. In the mouth, the wine is soft and smooth with aromas of ripe fruit balanced by a lovely freshness. Flavourful and elegant, it has a joyfully juicy, long finish that makes it very easy to drink

The grapes are harvested by hand in 150 kilo boxes, crushed and de-stemmed, and then fermented in granite lagares and stainless steel vats where the grapes are macerated for as long as is needed to obtain a wine with the desired body and structure. After malolactic fermentation, 20% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels, 30% in big oak vats and the remainder stored in stainless steel vats for 13 months. The wine was bottled in February 2017.

About the winery

Founded in 1880 by brothers Adriano and Antonio, Ramos Pinto is run today by the heirs of these two vintners. The House was acquired by Champagne Louis Roederer in 1990 and owner Jean Claude Rouzaud calls Ramos Pinto "the jewel of the Douro."

Among Port producers, Ramos Pinto enjoys the distinction of holding the largest proportion of vineyards in relation to its production, giving it a high degree of control over viticultural methods and harvest time. The House tends 460 acres of prime vineyards in the Alto Corgo and Douro Superior areas of the famed Douro region, the mountainous valley formed by the Douro River and its tributaries.

The four quintas or estates that make up Ramos Pinto's holdings are the Quinta do Bom Retiro, Quinta de Ervamoira, Quinta de Urtiga, and Quinta do Bons Ares. Ramos Pinto blends single quinta ports from Bom Retiro and Ervamoira grapes, and a single quinta port from Urtiga, as well as their internationally recognised still wines.

About the vineyard

Duas Quintas  refers to the two Ramos Pinto Douro vineyards where the grapes for this wine are grown, Quinta de Ervamoira and Quinta dos Bons Ares.

Ervamoira lies in a rocky area on the banks of the river Côa where the weather is hot and dry. This adds richness, density and body to the finished wine. It was the first quinta in the Douro where, in contrast to tradition, individual vineyard blocks were planted with a single variety, selected for the grape’s most appropriate soil and climate.

Bons Ares is a granite soiled vineyard of higher elevation with cool growing conditions, adding freshness, balance and vivacity.

90 Points - Mark Squires

"
This is a wonderful and classic regular 2015 tinto...Delicious and fruit forward yet beautifully supported by its acidity, this is a wine that is pretty hard to resist just now. It may not have grandeur, but it is worth leaning up on in its exuberant youth. It's not just a fruit bomb, by the way. It also has the structure to age a bit. They traditionally do. In this year, though, the gorgeous fruit and fresh feel may make you dive in pretty fast. This is a super bargain in a lighter-styled, fresh red, what I call a "summer red" these days. Don't drink it too warm."

"
This fresh, full-bodied red shows focus, with firm, integrated tannins guiding the plum, wild raspberry and sandalwood flavors underscored by graphite, pepper and spice accents. Aromas of tea and underbrush add detail to the long finish."

"
Violet, baked cherry, leather, clove and liquorice. Plenty of flavour – what a treat! Dry but supple tannins, long flavoursome finish. Full of Douro perfume."

"Deep garnet red. Cherries, blackberries, vanilla, wood and smoke. A balanced wine. A lot of good wine in Douro 4/5 Stars

"Very dark and powerful wine. Dark fruits on the nose with plums and blackberries as the most dominant. Also some vanilla, tobacco and wood. Medium+ body, nice acidity and really gripping tannins...Really impressed with this wine!"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
