"Easily one of the best winemakers in the Southern Rhône.” Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

A Vivino exclusive from a master of the southern Rhône!

Xavier Vignon is one of the most sought-after winemakers in France. A specialist in Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, he advises a roll call of famous names - but lesser known is that he also makes his own wines and that they are, not surprisingly, superb!

Xavier's skill is particularly evident in the 2015 vintage where he has taken the perfect grapes that the vintage blessed him with and created brilliant wines. And nowhere is this more true than with this 2015 Côte du Rhône Vieilles Vignes!

A pure, powerful, dense wine, it's picked up 90 points from Parker's Wine Advocate and an excellent 4 stars from Vivino reviewers. Pretty good for a wine that costs just £11.95!

Made from old vines of Grenache (100 years), Mourvèdre (60 years old) and Syrah (45 years old), this is a star from a superlative vintage  -and only at Vivino!

About the wine

Old vine Grenache, Syrah and a little Mourvèdre provide the basis for this lovely dense, supple and spicy wine. Côtes du Rhône wines already have a reputation for offering an exceptional price to quality ratio. But the Xavier Vignon's 2015 Vieilles Vignes takes this to extremes!

A deep red with purple tints, the wine smells of black cherries and plums, classic garrigue herbal notes, liquorice and a sweet spice. On the palate, it is generous and wonderfully supple. Full of dark fruit, hints of pepper, liquorice and some clove all balanced by a fine acid backbone. This is great, dense, powerful and - we can not emphasize it often enough - a little miracle at this price!

Harvest date is determined after daily tastings to check optimum maturity has been reached. The different grape varieties are harvested manually and fermented together at a moderate temperature. The maceration lasts 4 weeks. 60% of the wine is then aged in concrete tanks to ensure purity and the best possible expression of the grape variety. The remaining 40% is aged in oak barrels for 16 month in oak for added complexity

About the winery

Xavier Vignon is one of the most sought after oenologists in southern France.

He now advises over 200 different companies, including some very big names. But that's not all. He also brings his full expertise to bear on his own winery, where he vinifies a few parcels that feature some of the Rhône's greatest terroirs.

On these terroirs are ancient Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah vines that provide concentrated juice for his exceptional wines. After harvesting and slow fermentation, the different plots are matured in separate wooden and concrete containers. Xavier Vignon gives the wines time and dedication- you can feel it with every seductive sip.

About the vineyards

This 2015 was created from meticulous work by Xavier Vignon throughout the 2015 growing season.

He analyzed various factors in more than 400 vine parcels in the southern Rhône Valley. In the end, seven parcels were chosen because of their concentration of mineral salts and their total polyphenol index. All are located on the North Vaucluse . The grape varieties grown there are on average 100 years old for Grenache, 60 for Mourvèdre and 45 for Syrah.

90 Points - Joe Czerwinksi

"The 2015 Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes displays striking aromas of baked earth and cherries. Herbal and spice elements impart more complexity to the palate, while the tannins are silky. This classically styled Côtes du Rhône shows off licorice and pepper on the long finish.

90 Points - Andreas Larsson
Pure and polished palate , fine tannin and a fresh backbone and layers of juicy dark fruit , crushed plum and cherry with black pepper and clove notes, long and warm finish, nice drinkability ."

"This is a very nice wine!!!" 4.5/5 Stars

"Price is the reason for the four star rating. You will not find a better everyday drinking wine at this price point. We love Xavier’s wines and this allows us to have them more often"  4/5 Stars

"The bing cherry, cocoa powder, and red licorice aromas explode on the palate. Persistent, balanced and delicious. You’ll make friends with this Cote du Rhône." 5/5 Stars

"Amazing red fruit nose. Young still, but great density of flavor and freshness and beautiful length in the mouth...Very good price to quality ratio 4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
