"One of the most fascinating and compelling winemakers in the entire world, dedicated to the highest quality." Robert Parker

From everyday drinking to premium, single vineyard wines, Chapoutier is a source of excellence and this delicious Lirac is no exception!

From the quite brilliant 2016 vintage, at just £14.95 per bottle, it is excellent value!

Lirac is on the opposite side of the Rhône from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and like those wines is a blend of grenache and syrah. Smooth, spicy and laden with blue and red summer berry fruits, this ripe, soft wine offers much of the quality of Châteauneuf without the price tag.

Michel Chapoutier is a winemaking genius with more 100 point wines than any other winemaker.

Everywhere he goes he brings his Midas touch, making wines of exceptional quality. But his spiritual home is in the Rhône and the wines he produces here are counted among the most pure, silky, exotic, wines in the world...

About the wine

A supremely attractive wine with a deep, dense red hue, lifted with blueish tints. The nose is intense and generous with aromas of blueberries and blackberries. The palate is broad and concentrated with abundant blue and red fruits, all nicely wrapped up in velvety smooth tannins. The finish is long-lasting with additional hints of smoke, spice and liquorice.

This wine is all about the beautiful fruit and freshness so it is fermented in concrete tanks to ensure that none of that is lost. Afterwards it is aged for a further six months to let it settle and gain in complexity.

About the winery

As you may have gathered, Michel Chapoutier is both a remarkable man and a superb winemaker. In 1990, at the tender age of 26, he bought the family business from his grandfather and assumed full control of the winemaking and the maturation. Prior to this he had explored many other wine regions, expanding both his skills and his horizons.

On his return to the Rhone in 1987 he was appalled by the out-dated winemaking practices still rigorously adhered to by his father and brother. Their wines were thin, under-ripe and often oxidised, but they refused to change.

In 1989 Michel had enough: he went to his grandfather and told him that he was leaving, and that he couldn’t work with his family any more. His grandfather said he couldn’t leave, and offered to hand the reins directly to Michel. But Michel didn’t want to battle his family members every step of the way, so issued an ultimatum: he wanted to buy the company himself, or he would leave.

Michel got his way, and the company. Since then, the Chapoutier firm, which was in crisis back then, has been transformed beyond recognition. It is now a huge success, making some of the world's most acclaimed wines.

About the vineyard

Chapoutier says that, “the complexity in a wine comes from the level of microbiological activity around the vine roots" and in line with this, he approaches every one of his vineyards with the same rigorous biodynamic principles, to ensure that good grapes become memorable wine.

Soils on the Chapoutier estates never see pesticides or herbicides as floral growth amongst the vines is essential. The natural cycles of the earth, sun and moon are also considered.

The Lirac vineyards are planted on alluvial terraces, made up of smooth quartz pebbles and red clay, lying over a bed of sand.

91 points - Jeb Dunnuck
Incorporating plenty of Syrah, the 2016 Lirac reveals a deep purple/plum color to go with smoking notes of violets, red plums, crushed rocks and spring flowers. Showing more and more minerality with time in the glass, this medium to full-bodied red has solid mid-palate depth, fine tannin, and a great finish."

90 points - James Suckling
"There's an attractive vibrant energy to this young wine. It has a gently peppery edge across plentiful red berry fruits."

90 points - Joe Czerwinski
"The 2016 Lirac delivers what most consumers want to get from a Southern Rhône red. It's open, generous and supple, with ample black cherry fruit, a dusting of spicy complexity and a silky finish."

"Very powerful. A very ripe red fruit nose, kirsch. In the mouth, it's very strong, leather notes. Nice persistence"  4/5 Stars

"Spicy, fruity and buttery, very nice balance ... Tannins on the finish that should disappear soon."  4/5 Stars

"Powerful wine but full of potential!"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
