A Vivino UK exclusive!

From the extremely talented Jean-Marc Lafage (creator of Novellum Chardonnay) comes this stunning grenache, syrah and carignan blend that would put many a Chateauneuf to shame.

Scoring 91 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and previously described as a 'mini Sine Qua Non', (whose reds sell for not less than £200), the 2016 Chimères is an absolute steal at just £12.59!

A beautifully rounded wine that is succulent and smooth, it is made attentively and gently with finesse, balance and depth of flavour the key priorities - there aren’t many wines that offer this level of drinking pleasure at such a low price.

We're not quite sure how Jean-Marc produces such fantastic wines at such low prices, but we're glad he does!

The 2016 Chimères delivers on every level and we highly recommend that you seize the opportunity to grab a few bottles!

About the wine

The 2016 Chimères is opulent with layers of spicy, herbal, savoury fruits. Aromatic on the nose, it has floral notes (think violets), ripe black fruit - cherry and blackberry - a peppery spice and the classic southern Rhone garrigue. It is a rich, deep wine with a long, mineral spicy finish that massively over-delivers for this price level.

Traditionally more well-known for its fortified wines, Maury is beginning to make a name for itself with dry wines as well. With its fantastic terroir and its ancient, dry-farmed vines, this part of the Rousillon is gathering more and more attention from winemakers as they begin to realise the sheer potential here.

Chimeres is made from 60 year old vines of grenache, syrah and carignan planted on black schist and schistous clay soils near the village of Maury and at the base of the mountain-top fortress of Quéribus - one of the last sanctuaries of the Cathars.

Made through a strict selection of fruit, first at the vineyard and then a berry by berry selection after destemming, Chimeres captures the dark fruit flavours and spicy minerality of the black soils of the Agly valley.

About the winery

“Run by the talented (and fast driving) Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage, from their cellar just outside Perpignan… this seat includes vineyards spread throughout the Roussillon, allowing them to make the most of the diverse terroirs and micro-climates. I struggle to think of another portfolio that encompasses anywhere close to this level of value, and the average quality to price [ratio] for these wines is just hard to believe” Jeb Dunnuck.

Although Jean-Marc Lafage is still young, he has many years of experience in making top-class wines. Together with his wife, Eliane Salinas, he produces superb wines, including this beautiful Chimères and the popular Novellum Chardonnay. Together they have created one of Europe's most sought-after wineries.

About the vineyard

Domaine Lafage has 160 hectares under vine and the Chimères is made from 65 year old vines planted on the black schist and schistous clay soils near the village of Maury and at the base of the mountain-top fortress of Quéribus.

The vineyards are organically managed and harvesting is done by hand. The vineyards are managed organically and have an average age of 65 years.

91 points - Joe Czerwinski
The wine showcases red fruit (cherries and raspberries), which accent it with dried spices and a hint of dark chocolate. It's full-bodied and supple, with just the slightest suggestion of warmth on the finish. It's another great value from proprietor-winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage to drink over the next few years."

90 points - Decanter
"Toasty oak and lovely, lifted floral aromas, textured tannins and deep, dense fruit on palate. A big, bold wine."

93 points - Jeb Dunnuck (2015 vintage)
"Giving up jammy notes of black raspberries, licorice, smoked herbs and chocolate, the 2015 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Chimeres (aged in demi-muid and concrete vates) needs to be snatched up by savvy readers. Full-bodied, deep and layered with incredible texture, I actually called this a mini Sine Qua Non. I would gladly pay three to four times the going rate. Bravo!"

"Bouquet of dark berries, ripe plums, licorice, leather. At the tongue opulent flavours of dark fruits, raspberries, chocolate, licorice and leather. Than again pepper and substantial herbs. Harmonic embedded tannins and balanced acidity. Long finish. Had a longing for a powerful French red although it's still hot summer. This full bodied complex beauty doesn't disappoint. 4.3/5 (incl. bonus for great qpr)"  4.3/5 Stars

"Balanced black fruits with a granitic steely presence which follows through on the palate and finishes all class and depth. Some juicy Syrah but the body is Carignans dry pithy grainy character. Makes me want to sit at the foot of a Cathar ruin and soak up the southern french sun, again!4/5 Stars

"Really nice red - power and juice, lots of dark berries, fine on the nose with a beautiful colour...a real super wine for very little money!!"  4/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
