Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labour of love for two of the world’s great Riesling producers!

One from the Old World, the legendary Ernst Loosen of the Mosel in Germany, one of the world's greatest winemakers - and one from the New World, Chateau Ste Michelle, Washington State's foremost winery and a superb Riesling producer in their own right.

An intermingling of Old and New World philosophies and techniques enables the making of an extraordinary Riesling from beautifully ripe Washington state grapes.

Named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration.

Given its status as one of the New World's greatest Rieslings, the Eroica is surprisingly great value at just £19.75 per bottle!

About the wine

This Riesling offers sweet lime and tangerine aromas with subtle mineral notes, and a mouth-watering acidity that is beautifully balanced by the generously fruity Washington grapes. Long and intense on the finish, this could age nicely but why wait when it's so delicious right now!

No expense was spared in the making of this Eroica Riesling. In order to protect flavour intensity, grapes were harvested at night when the vineyard temperatures were coldest. The berries went directly to the press, avoiding the possible loss of freshness caused by a crusher / de-stemmer.

A cool fermentation created a seamless integration of fruit, sugar and acid, while selected fruit-driven yeasts, with slower fermentation rates, were used to prolong fermentation in order to further heighten fruit flavours.

Ernst Loosen and Bob Bertheau considered dozens of small lots, each reflecting a unique character depending on where the grapes were grown; this is reflected in the complexity of the final blend.

About the winery

Dating back to the repeal of prohibition, when nobody believed areas outside of California could make great wines, Chateau Ste Michelle was Washington State's founding winery.

Spurred on in the late 1960's by legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, Chateau Ste Michelle has never looked back and is now far and away Washington's premier winery, having not only been awarded 'Winery of the Year' honours more than 20 times by Wine & Spirits Magazine, but also made a name for itself as one of the New World's foremost producers of Riesling.

About the vineyard

Eroica begins in the vineyard with Ernst Loosen and Chateau Ste. Michelle winemaker Bob Bertheau collaborating on site selection, irrigation management, crop levels and canopy management. They work with vineyard managers to adjust yields and manage fruit exposure to prolong the ripening season for added flavor development of these cooler climate vineyards.  Evergreen Vineyard in the Ancient Lakes AVA provided nearly half of the fruit for the 2015 blend.  Viewcrest, Lawrence and Jones Brothers vineyards also contributed to the blend.

About the winemaker

Bob has maintained Chateau Ste. Michelle’s legacy of crafting awarding-winning Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, while putting his own signature on the wines. “I have learned from Ernst Loosen, our German winemaking partner on Eroica Riesling, how to protect fruit purity and produce fresh, fruit-driven Rieslings.

"
The 2015 Riesling Eroica is another beautiful, pure and racy white that has vibrant acidity, medium-bodied richness and classy notes of lychee nut, petrol and honeyed minerality. Drink this pure, juicy and impeccably balanced beauty over the coming 4-5 years. It will keep for over a decade if you're so inclined as well."

"
Very pale yellow. Subtle, fresh scents of peach, lime, orange blossom, ginger, clove and quinine. Concentrated and full but with a light touch owing to its appley acidity and piquant spicy lift. There's nothing hard or tart about this fruit bomb of a Riesling but it has a reasonably tightly coiled spring. An unusually rich but successful vintage for this wine, which comes across as drier than its 11.8 grams per liter residual sugar would suggest. Finishes with excellent sneaky length."

Lively and precise, with floral peach and petrol aromas and succulent, crisp flavors of lime and grapefruit"

"A very nice American Riesling...Pale Straw in color with citrus and pineapple nose. Nice lite floral bouquet as well. Just a light touch of pineapple sweetness with a persistent and zippy acidity. Very well executed Pacific NW Riesling."  4/5 Stars

"Fresh Riesling with a nice acidity. You can note the German influence and the collaboration with the German Riesling specialist Dr. Loosen. Well done.4/5 Stars

"Beautiful dry Riesling, great yellow color, nice acidic punch at the beginning, lots of honey, cantaloupe and pear, ends with just the perfect amount of sweetness.4.5 / 5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
