There are still bargains to be found in Bordeaux!

Domaine de Chevalier is one of the leading wines of Pessac-Leognan and has been on fire in recent years, making wines that, within the appellation, are second only to the great estates of La Mission and Haut Brion - but at a fraction of the price.

With strict selections being made in the vineyard and the cellar, Chevalier's second wine, the L'Esprit de Chevalier, is the best it has ever been. It offers an experience that is tantalisingly similar to the ‘grand vin’ but at a considerably lower price!

The Esprit shares the same terroir, the same care in the vineyard and is crafted by the same winemaking team as its big brother - the only differences are that it is made from younger vines, sees less oak and is made in a charming, approachable style.

Rich, lively and with an enticing spicy quality to its black cherry and bramble fruits, this is top quality, charming Bordeaux at a very agreeable price!

About the wine

"Domaine de Chevalier makes one of the world's finest red wines" Stephen Tanzer

Esprit de Chevalier is a charming red wine with many of the same qualities as the grand vin and the added advantage that it can be enjoyed earlier. An intense, extremely deep, dark colour with ruby highlights. A fine, subtle nose of very ripe black fruit, spices and toast. Lovely savoury notes; deep, sweet black fruit and mineral notes, with a fine tannic structure and an elegant, refined mouthfeel. Full-bodied on the palate with textured, mellowed tannins, it is deceptively long and perfectly balanced with a spicy, cassis fruit finish. A very fine, polished wine that is drinking perfectly right now.

Domaine de Chevalier is renowned for its ability to produce great wines thanks to its unique terroir and a draconian selection in the vineyard and the cellar. In fact, this philosophy at times requires vineyard workers to carry out five waves of picking in order to select only the ripest possible grapes.

Esprit de Chevalier was first made in 1986. The blend includes barrels that do not have quite the structure and focus of the grand vin as well as wine made from young vines. All the components that go into Esprit de Chevalier must nevertheless be complex, well-balanced, well-structured and, above all, elegant enough to be in keeping with Chevalier’s image (everything else goes in to the 3rd wine or is sold off in bulk).

About the winery

This world famous estate can trace its history back to 1763 and successive owners have steadfastly stuck to the notion of calling the estate a “Domaine” rather than the much more common Bordeaux estate term of “Chateau”. And this is nothing to do with a lack of a physical building as their house and cellars are as impressive as anyone in the area.

The modern history and dramatic rise in quality and reputation of Domaine de Chevalier commenced in 1983, when the Bernard family acquired the estate. This included the creation of the second label – l’Esprit de Chevalier in 1986 for both the white and red wines. Since then this venerable domaine has built a reputation as one of the best in the revered Pessac-Léognan region (the finest part of the Graves appellation).

About the vineyard

Domaine de Chevalier has a complex terroir and soil that starts with the forest that surrounds the vineyards on three sides.

The forest enhances the extremes of temperature. The terroir is gravel and black sand with a sub-soil of a clay, gravel and hardpan. Today, a wind machine and even helicopters are also used to keep the vines dry on occasion. This works because the helicopter blades stir and blend the lower layers of cold air with warmer air and helps avoid damage from frost. Extreme measures are taken - but the results are exceptional!

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
