La Rioja Alta don't make bad wine. Everything they touch seems to turn to vinous gold - and this incredible skill has made them one of Spain's greatest wineries.

So it's hardly surprising that when they decided to make great white wine, they turned to Spain's unique Albariño grape and its heartland, the Rías Baixas.

The results have been spectacular and has seen their Lagar de Cevera recognised as a leading Albariño - one of the world's most exciting, deliciously dry white wines.

With mouth-watering freshness, pure fruit and an intensely aromatic nose, it's no wonder that vintage after vintage receives great reviews from the critics and Vivino users alike.

At just £13.50 per bottle with a 22% discount, this is a superb bargain!

About the wine

In the glass the Lagar de Cervera is a clean, bright yellow with green hues. The wine particularly stands out for its great aromatic intensity, with aromas of stone fruit (peaches) and white fruit (ripe apples and quinces) and even a touch of tropical fruit against a background of lemon citrus notes. Big, flavoursome and fresh in the mouth it has a crisp, well-integrated acidity before a fruity and particularly long finish that has a mouth-watering saline minerality. Deeply refreshing and extremely high quality!

The O Rosal Valley where the vineyards are located is a privileged area with a feature that sets it apart from other areas in the D.O. Rías Baixas, such as Cambados —it has a very particular microclimate. Despite the Atlantic influence, the area has considerable sun exposure and therefore the grapes ripen sooner. Planted on south and south-west facing slopes, the vineyards get optimal ventilation, producing a perfect balance between acidity and alcohol content and aromatic intensity.

After manual harvesting, the grapes were taken in refrigerated transport to the winery for sorting. The best clusters were destemmed and the grapes macerated for 10 hours. They were then gently pressed before alcoholic fermentation with the temperature kept at 15 °C. Due to the characteristics of this harvest, 10% of tanks underwent malolactic fermentation. After the first racking and until bottling, the wine was kept in contact with the fine lees, with periodic punch downs to achieve greater density and complexity.

About the winery

Lagar de Cervera is owned by world famous La Rioja Alta S.A. In the late 1980s La Rioja Alta S.A. finally abandoned the production of white Rioja wines and began a painstaking search for a world-class white with great personality and traits that would set it apart from other Spanish wines.

They chose O Rosal, Pontevedra as the place to settle in Galicia and explore new winemaking avenues. Having acquired a traditional winery, Fernández Cervera Hermanos S.L. they changed the old name to Lagar de Fornelos, S.A., but as a tribute to the founders, they always respected the brand name Lagar de Cervera. In the 1990s the area of the vineyard was expanded from the original 5 hectares to the 65 hectares available today - some of the best land available in the region.

More recently, in 2013, the winery celebrated it's 25th anniversary and also opened it's brand new €2.8 million facility

About the vineyard

A 100% estate-owned Albariño vineyard —the biggest in the D.O. Rías Baixas— located in one of the most privileged locations of this popular wine region.

The oldest plots —Seoane and Cervera— are located in Finca Viña Cervera, in O Rosal. The vines average 25 years of age and enjoy exceptional conditions, allowing Lager De Cervera to be produced with some of the best grapes produced in Galicia.

The soils in this sub-area can be granitic, sedimentary with rounded boulders (in terraces close to the river Miño) and, as in our case, of metamorphic origin with mineral-rich, schistose materials. It is a shallow, sandy loam soil with good drainage, a very low pH and a balanced fertility.

"
This has a wonderful acid intensity with stone and lemon undertones. A linear and tight white. So focused that it is almost unforgiving. But the fruit density and purity brings it all together."

"
This is so pure, pretty and bright. It has a lively citrus core (lemons and tangerines) with a hint of tropical fruit (passionfruit and pineapple), but never so much that it intrudes on the freshness. The acidity is quite lively, and it combines on the finish with a mouthwatering saline character. This is pure and very treble heavy, with lots of vitality yet no lack of flavour. Benchmark Albariño."

"Very fine young albariño, lingering beautifully on the finish. Pears, quinces and a salty dab of preserved lemons here – a classic match for white fish"

"Great value! Pale lemon color with some green notes. Distinct floral nose with hints of exotic fruit like banana and tinned peach. Perfectly dry wine with fresh acidity. Taste of exotic fruit with a salty, mineral finish."  4/5 Stars

"Very nice aromatic intensity on the nose with stone fruits, peaches, ripe apples, quinces, lemon tree leaves, very flavorsome on the palate with well integrated acidity, fresh and crispy. 4/5 Stars

"A very good value Albarino with an appealing nose of pineapple, pear and apple, plenty of freshness and good acidity. Crisp and direct"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
