A 6 year-old Rioja Reserva, from a very good vintage, drinking beautifully right now and yet only £12.49 per bottle...

This must be one of Rioja's greatest values!

The Palacio del Burgo Reserva is a group of six families who came together to create the best wine possible from their amazing old vines (some up to 90 years old).

And they have been hugely successful. Those vines, the terroir of the vineyards and the care and love put into a family-owned and run business have all played their part.

They have in the past been listed amongst Spain's top five cellars at the International Wine & Spirits Competition and were voted ‘Best in Rioja' by the World Association of Wine Writers.

About the wine

Red ruby color; black pepper and vanilla flavors and some mature black fruit on the nose - vibrant and perfumed. Well-balanced, soft and elegant in the mouth, dark-fruited and rich with fine ripe tannins on the finish along with some vanilla notes from the oak and a lovely spiciness. With wines like these it is clear to see just why Rioja is so popular amongst wine drinkers!

2012 was a very good vintage in Rioja and it shows in this Reserva, which is drinking perfectly right now. A blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Carignan aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months.

About the winery

Palacio del Burgo (Bodegas Burgo Viejo) started life in the 1950s as a co-operative and sold their wine in bulk.  Six families of farmers then combined forces to turn it into an actual winery in 1987. Since then, they have produced their own label wines, using their own estate grapes.  The 500-acre estate in Alfaro at the easternmost end of Rioja in the sub-region Rioja Baja is dedicated to 90% red wine production with 5% each white and rosé.

About the vineyard

The vineyards of Palacio del Burgo are spread throughout the municipality of Alfaro, La Rioja, Spain at the foot of Yerga Mountain on the banks of the fertile Ebro valley.. This area offers a huge variety of soils and microclimates where Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha, Graciano and Viura flourish to become the wines of Burgo Viejo.

Within this selection of vineyard, you can find modern vineyards such as the Organic Graciano or vineyards of Garnacha that are over 90 years old!

91 Points - Josh Raynolds
Brilliant ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced cherry and red berries on the fragrant nose, along with hints of cracked pepper, vanilla and woodsmoke. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering lively cherry and raspberry flavors that become sweeter on the back half. In a forward, seamless style, finishing with very good clarity and supple framing tannins."

Gold Medal - San Francisco International Wine Competition

"Delicious. A well priced Rioja that delivers smoothness, cherry, red berry, some oak and a little smoke and spice. Decanted for around an hour. This is probably good for a few more years, but buy a few so you don't have to wait to try" 4/5 Stars
"Delicious Rioja - Great structure, well balanced acid and tannins with a smooth mouth feel - Good use of oak that is not overly dominant 4/5 Stars (previous vintage)
"Very good Rioja reserva. Heavy oak. Vanilla baking spices, cinnamon, and a bit of red fruit. Rounded flavors, full body, smooth and easy-drinking." 4/5 Stars (previous vintage)

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
