From the makers of one of Portugal's greatest wines, Chryseia, comes this generous and classy red, Prazo de Roriz!

With its silky, full-bodied style and deep, dark fruit, it's clear that this is the product of great winemaking. But that's not surprising considering its pedigree

Prazo de Roriz is made from younger vines and is designed to be immediately delicious and drinkable from the get-go. But such is the skill of winemaking here that even at this level they have created a wine that not only fufills that brief, but also has the quality, fruit and structure to age beautifully over the next 8-10 years.

And all for just £13.90!

Prats & Symington is the creation of Charles Symington, head of the famous Port family (think Graham's and Warre's) and Bruno Prats, ex-owner of the much-loved Bordeaux estate, Cos d’Estournel, and all-round wine genius.

They have long championed the quality of Portugal’s indigenous grapes and their considerable potential. The Symington family have some of the very best vineyards in the Douro and the fruit they yield allows the talented Bruno Prats and the winemaking team to deliver wines that are really quite special.

About the wine

The Prazo de Roriz is a lovely little wine. Black and red fruits (blueberry, raspberries and cherries) mingle on the nose along with some lovely, peppery spice. As the wine gets a bit more air, it reveals some more layers of liquorice, graphite and earth. Suprisingly complex for a wine at this price level. On the palate, this is delightfully full-bodied, smooth and ripe with creamy dark fruit, grippy tannins and a long, savoury finish.

The grapes were picked by hand and the bunches were manually sorted at the small, dedicated Quinta de Roriz winery. The grapes were then inoculated with selected yeast and maceration was achieved through pumping over. Once fermentation was finished, the wine was aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks to retain freshness and fruit and 400 L. French oak barrels to add a touch more complexity. The wine  was bottled in June 2016.

About the winery

Founded in 1999 as a joint venture between veteran Bordeaux winemaker, Bruno Prats and the Symington family, who have been Port producers in the Douro Valley for over 120 years. It is an independent company specializing in dry red wines which have been at the forefront of the qualitative Douro DOC revolution and instrumental in driving the high quality image of the region forward.

About the vineyard

Prats + Symington is the owner of two prime Douro estates, Quinta de Roriz and Quinta da Perdiz. Both Quintas lie near the town of São Joao da Pesqueira; Roriz sitting in a natural amphitheatre on the banks of the Douro, whilst Perdiz lies on a steep gradient on the other side of the same mountain in the Rio Torto Valley, which runs north-west into the main Douro Valley near Pinhão.

The different microclimates of the two valleys produce very different results, as do the varying soils. Roriz has traces of tin mixed into the schistous soil from the old mine workings at the highest point of the estate, and this gives an evident minerality to the wines. Its north-facing aspect, alongside the Douro, offers the benefits of cooler nights during the ripening season, which translates into pronounced aromatic qualities in its wine.

To make the 2015 Prazo de Roriz, the grapes were taken from both vineyards, 54% from Roriz and 46% from Perdiz.

About the winemaker

Charles Symington is the head Winemaker at Symington Family Estates. Having joined the company in 1995, he went on to succeed his father, Peter, as taster and winemaker for the family’s Port Houses, as well as head winemaker for the family’s Douro DOC wines, which are increasingly earning recognition around the world. Charles was made ‘Winemaker of the Year’ by highly respected Portuguese magazine, Wine - Essencia do Vinho in 2016. He was also awarded Winemaker of The Year – Fortified Wines, Portugal (2006 and 2012).These accolades are testament to Charles’ work over two decades, which have seen the family build on the strong legacy bequeathed by its ancestors.

Bruno is the grandson of Fernand Ginestet, the world famous Bordeaux wine grower and négociant, owner of Château Margaux, and of Jean Prats, former President of Saint-Raphael a major French spirit company of the time.

In 1968 and 1969 Bruno Prats worked under his uncle at Château Margaux. In 1970 he took control with his mother and two brothers of Château Cos d’Estournel, the famed Cru Classé of Saint Estephe, in the Medoc.

Under Bruno, Cos d’Estournel reached the unofficial status of "Super Second" i.e. the very few chateaux from the Medoc which were classified second growth in 1855 and which wine is presently considered to be of equal quality with the five first growths

"
Young yet focused, with a vanillia oak character on the nose and palate adorning blackberry and dark cherry fruit, underpinned by firm yet fine-grained tannins and a zesty freshness."

"
Dark bluish crimson. Smells riper and richer and more dark-fruited than the 2014. Lovely rocky dark fruit, so Douro on the nose. Bone dry, almost chalky in texture, such tender tannins. Real finesse and hidden depth. Savoury, rocky aftertaste."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
