From some of Italy's greatest winemakers comes this delicious, fragrant white wine.

An unusual mixture of Vermentino and Chardonnay, Samas is a modern Sardinian white. At every stage between the vineyard and the bottle, the goal is simple: capture the vivid, vibrant flavours of fruit grown in the Mediterranean sun.

And boy does it succeed!

A joyous glassful of tropical fruit and citrus notes complemented by a sage-like fragrance typical of Sardinia, Samas sings of Italian sunshine - guaranteed to brighten any January day.

A collaboration between a local winery, Giacomo Taschis,“the father of Italian wine”, Marchese Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, proprietor of Sassicaia and Sebastiano Rosa, ex-Sassicaia winemaker, Agricola Punica was always set for great things.

And yet, despite this heavyweight pedigree and the quality in the glass, the Samas is available for just £14.95 a bottle. An utter bargain!

About the wine

A vivid yellow straw colour with soft greenish hints in the glass, aromas of tropical fruit and citrus are complemented by an unusual herbal-sage fragrance, typical of whites from Sardinia. A silky texture, concentrated pear and apple flavours and a touch of waxiness is balanced by a fresh, crisp acidity. A long, refreshing finish ends in a mineral, almost saline-like note. A wine that is very easy to drink and that would match nicely with seafood, or just as an aperitif.

Everything possible is done to ensure that Samas remains fresh and vibrant. Harvesting is done by hand at dawn and the grapes transferred to the winery in small boxes cooled down by dry ice to keep them at a lower temperature; then the grapes are carried straight to the press, where in a cold and static environment a first-pressed juice is obtained.

Subsequently, prolonged fermentation at a controlled temperature (16 °C) enables the wine to be kept on the lees for approximately 40 days. The product is frequently pumped over to optimise the fermentation process. The vinification is done separately for each varietal in stainless still vats.

Eventually, the Vermentino and Chardonnay wines are blended together; this blend will then rest in small concrete vats for about 3 months to complete the maturation and a natural stabilization, as Samas is neither filtered nor clarified before being bottled.

About the winery

Situated in the south west of Sardinia in an area known as Sulcis Meridionale, the award-winning Agricola Punica cellar is a joint venture between Sebastiano Rosa, celebrated oenologist and winemaker at Sassicaia, legendary Tuscan wine consultant Giacomo Tachis ( who is also renowned for his work at Sassicaia) , Sardinian winery Cantina di SantadiSantadi President Antonello Pilloni and the famous Tenuta San Guido Estate responsible for Sassicaia and owned by Sebastiano's stepfather Marchese Nicolo Incisa Della Rocchetta.

From the first time Tachis visited the island, he was convinced of Sardinia's outstanding winemaking potential. In the mid 1980s, he began to consult for the Sardinian regional wine consortium and eventually, more specifically, for Cantina Sociale di Santadi. It was during this time he first began thinking about a joint venture. Dr. Rosa recounts, "It was Giacomo Tachis who turned us on to Sardinia and Carignano. He convinced us that we could make a great Carignano-based wine. We bought the estate in 2002 because we knew what the region is capable of."

About the vineyard

In 2002, Agricola Punica purchased a 370 acres estate divided between two sites: Barrua and Narcao, located in the soutwest region of Sardinia, in the area known as Basso Sulcis. Even though the vineyards are situated in the DOC Carignano Del Sulcis area, the wine falls under the I.G.T. Appelation of Isola dei Nuraghi, a name referencing the ancient stone buildings built by the Nuragic civilization which shaped the island’s development from the Neolithic age until 238 B.C. when Sardinia was brought under the Roman Empire.

Agricola Punica vineyards lie inland from the coast and are planted to 65 hectares counter espalier trained vines, comprising Carignano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah for the reds, while further 5 hecatares are currently planted to Vermentino and Chardonnay white grapes, for an overall of 70 hecatares.

About the winemaker

Agricola Punica is managed by Sebastiano Rosa who came to Sardinia after many years as winemaker at Sassicaia in Tuscany.

92 Points - James Suckling
"
The dried pear and apple with hints of lemon aromas are impressive. Full body, waxy and rich. Lots of fruit. Excellent as always."

90 Points - Monica Larner

"Here is a terrific and extremely well-priced blend of 80% Vermentino and 20% Chardonnay...The 2016 Samas gets its name from the Punic god of the sun. Samas is indeed a bright and luminous wine that shows the unmistakable traits of warm-climate winemaking. In contact with the lees for up to 40 days, the bouquet is softly layered with peach and tropical fruit. Bright citrus and pink grapefruit make for a lively finish." .

"Superb southern Italian white that could come from Central Europe or Germany. Explosive combination of apricot and almond, with a subtle bitter sensation towards the end of the finish"  4/5 Stars

"Vermentino and Chardonnay grapes. Fresh apple flavors and aromas with an underlying minerality and a hint of tropical fruit. Nice.4/5 Stars

"White Peach and flowers in the nose. Again peach, apricot and a herbal bitter background on the palate. Citrus kicks in just a few seconds later and a refreshing crisp feeling remains. Very nice." 3.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
