"An extraordinary red wine which tastes like it should cost three to five times as much!"

So said Robert Parker about the 2012 vintage of this fantastic wine - and the 2015 is the best vintage yet!

This extraordinary value sums up the main appeal of Solanera, but there is a lot more to the story...Ancient vineyards believed to date back to Roman times, an indigenous Spanish grape variety which is now a major ingredient in great Chateauneuf, a forgotten region rebuilt by a single family - it's fascinating stuff, but the wine is what it's all about, and the wine is sensational!

About the wine

The Castaño Solanera Viñas Viejas is a complex and sophisticated blend of Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha Tintorera from vineyards planted at 800 metres above sea level.

This wonderful red wine explodes out of the glass with all manner of aromas…blackcurrant, raspberry fruit jam, graphite, flowers, peppery spice and liquorice. In the mouth it's full-bodied and soft, yet structured and powerful. A blend of 65% Monastrell (aka Mourvedre), 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Garnacha, the palate is densely packed with black pepper, cassis, licorice and blackberry fruit. There's good freshness on a long finish  full of dark chocolate, coffee and spice.

Situated in south-eastern Spain, Yecla's vinous roots stretch back to the Roman empire, yet it came close to disappearing and would have perhaps done so if weren't for the likes of Bodegas Castaño. They have been at the forefront of the region's renaissance and Yecla is now internationally famous for its high quality wines at great prices.

To make the Solanera, the grapes were vinified traditionally and macerated for 10 days before fermentation at 28ºC. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, after which the wine was aged for 10 months in a combination of oak barrels, of which 80% were French, 20% were American and a third were new.

About the winery

The Castano family has virtually single-handedly resurrected the forgotten but ancient Yecla region in south-eastern Spain. Most of their vineyards are planted with the native Monastrell variety - which changed its name to Mourvedre when it travelled to France and became the backbone of some of the greatest Chateauneuf-du-Papes.

Bodagas Castano manages the impressive feat of bottling the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at high altitude and transformed into robust, powerfully deep, yet smooth wines. For several generations, Bodegas Castano has been a pioneer in the region; they are true believers in the idea that there is no substitute for quality.

About the vineyard

The Monastrell grapes are grown on non-irrigated bush vines in the Las Gruesas and Pozuelo vineyards respectively - which forces the vines to send roots deep into the arid soils. This in turn adds to the depth and complexity of the grapes.

The altitude of both vineyards is 800m above sea level and the vines have a North-South orientation with an average age of 40 years. Soils here are limestone and the planting densities are 1,600 vines per hectare in Las Gruesas and 2,700 vines per hectare in Pozuelo. The Monastrell grapes were harvested by mid October, with excellent quality and health. 2013 was a vintage with very intense aromatic characteristics, and more freshness and softness.

92 Points - Luis Gutierrez

"
This is the vintage of the big change in this wine, where, as with the majority of its siblings, there is better balance and more integrated oak, more freshness and better balance. The nose is quite captivating, especially after some time in the glass, when it starts developing some floral aromas, perfect ripeness, no warmth or alcohol and a powerful, yet terribly balanced palate with concentration and elegance, fine-grained tannins and clean, focused flavors. This is my favorite Solanera to date."

"A succulent, lip-smacking tasty Spanish red wine blend. Tanned leather, dried herbs and dried red fruit on the nose and palate. The Yecla wine region is in southern Spain and is an emerging area to watch for quality wines."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
