Situated just a few hundred metres outside Pauillac, equidistant from the famous names of Pontet-Canet and Grand-Puy-Lacoste, lies the small but perfectly formed Château Hourtin-Ducasse.

Wine has been made here for centuries and the quality is such that it has been awarded Cru Bourgeois status since the early 20th century. Now family-owned and run by the Marengos (an oddity in the increasingly commercial world of Bordeaux), this small winery is making a name for itself with elegant, balanced Bordeaux that reflects the qualities of each vintage.

A Pauillac in all but name, Hourtin Ducasse 2010 is classic Bordeaux from a superlative vintage where great wines were made at all levels. Savoury black fruit, cigar-box and fine, structured tannins combine to create a captivating wine that is difficult to resist drinking now but will have a great future ahead of it.

Because they make wines for the love of it rather than for the shareholders, Hourtin-Ducasse remains great value at £19.95 per bottle - rather less than many of its near-neighbours!

About the wine

This beautiful, structured wine is a classic Haut Médoc! A lovely, complex fruity nose features fresh black fruit along with some spicy notes and a hint of coffee and tobacco. The full and concentrated palate continues the theme of ripe fruit and is rounded off confidently by smooth, yet bold tannins. The vintage has blessed Hourtin Ducasse with superb grapes and it shows in the way this wine balances structure with pure fruit. Delicious now - especially with a couple of hours in a decanter - this will really hit its peak in about 3-5 years.

Hourtin Ducasse use both biodynamic and organic methods throughout their vineyards. They are not slaves to the philosophy though and should they need to step outside these rules to make sure they have a great wine, then they are prepared to do so.

Their main aim is to make wines that reflect the vintage whilst still remaining elegant, pure and balanced. To this end the wines are fermented in stainless steel vats and then aged in one or two year-old oak barrels. The barrels are then blind-blended before bottling to ensure that the final product is made according to the actual qualities of the wine itself rather than any pre-conceived ideas or formulas.

About the winery

The Château Hourtin-Ducasse vineyard is located at the Lieu dit Le Fournas, a few hundred metres from the boundaries of Pauillac. Dating from the 18th century, it has produced a Cru Bourgeois since 1932.

The name stems from two former owners, Mr. Hourtin and Mr. Ducasse, but since 1976, the Château has been owned by the Marengo family who have taken care of it and loved itfor the past 40 years.

About the vineyard

The vineyard stretches over 25 hectares with 23 hectares of vines which, on average, are 15 to 20 years old. They are cultivated using conservation farming techniques that takes advantage of organic and biodynamic methods to improve the plants’ immune defences and therefore allow the vines to express themselves completely.

Besides their determination to preserve and protect the richness of the local environment, the Marengo family also firmly believe it improves the quality of their wines.

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast
This is an impressive, concentrated wine that gives pride of place to the ripe berry flavors and the balancing acidity. Underneath, the tannins are built up, showing that the wine will age."

90 points - Natalie MacLean
"Beautifully balanced and elegant with great finesse in this Bordeaux red wine blend of Cabernet and Merlot grapes. Smoky with fleshy black fruit. Great for this price. Pair with rare filet mignon. Racy mouth-watering acidity. Great cellar candidate as well."

Gold Medal - China Wine & Spirits Awards

"Deep red colour with a full body. Herby black Berry nose. Mid to high tannins. Blackberry and cherry flavours with a slight smokiness. Very nice4/5 Stars

"My first left bank red and it didn't disappoint. Less fruity & sweet than new world cabs I've tried & loved, but a delightfully refined & complex wine. Deep purple in appearance. Nose of blackcurrant and tobacco, leading into a balanced palette of blackcurrant, minerals and bites of dark chocolate. Medium acidity & body. Dry lingering minerally/olive finish with medium tannins asking for another sip. Very good."  4/5 Stars

"Decanted for an hour. Lots of beautiful chocolate and cherry on the nose. Full mouthfeel and gorgeous dry tannins on the finish. A winner in every respect!4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
