"It’s another smoking good wine from bon vivant Jean-Marc Lafage!" Jeb Dunnuck

Jean-Marc just can't stop making great wine!

His Bastide Miraflors red and Novellum white are both Vivino best-sellers and mow he's hit the ball out of the park with this, the 2016 Roubials...

Just as with those wines, the value for money here is tremendous.

At £13.95, the Roubials is an absolute steal for a wine that although just released, has so far scored 4.4 stars on Vivino and received great reviews from the critics.

There’s no need to dress up this silky-smooth, exuberant and fruit-dense grenache and syrah blend. It’s a Lafage classic; a brilliant red crafted from fruit of exceptional ripeness, balance and quality.

It simply sings of its sun-drenched origins.

You won't find this terrific red anywhere else in the UK - it's offered excusively for Vivino customers. Don't miss it!

About the wine

Described by the winemaker as having an “explosive” nose; it’s aromatically enticing with very ripe, bold black fruits, coffee, tobacco and spicy black pepper. The palate is as opulent, full of dark plum and black cherry fruits, spice and liquorice. Wonderfully rich, silky, supple and perfumed, there's also a definite minerality that comes from the famed black schist soils of the Agly valley. There are echoes of the great wines of Priorat here - but at a fraction of the price!

The fruit for Roubials is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and cool fermented. The wine is matured in traditional demi muids - 600 ltr oak barrels.

“I would say that this extraordinary zone in the central Agly valley has the potential to be one of the rare ‘grands crus’ of the South of France.  Or, if you prefer, to produce the greatest red wines of Northern Catalonia, wines which deserve to be tasted and judged alongside those of the ‘grand cru’ of Southern Catalonia: Priorat.” Andrew Jefford, Decanter

About the winery

“Run by the talented (and fast driving) Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage, from their cellar just outside Perpignan… this seat includes vineyards spread throughout the Roussillon, allowing them to make the most of the diverse terroirs and micro-climates. I struggle to think of another portfolio that encompasses anywhere close to this level of value, and the average quality to price [ratio] for these wines is just hard to believe” Jeb Dunnuck.

Although Jean-Marc Lafage is still young, he has many years of experience in making top-class wines.

Together with his wife, Eliane Salinas, he produces superb wines, including the beautiful Chimères and the popular Novellum Chardonnay. Together they have created one of Europe's most sought-after wineries.

About the vineyard

The grapes from Roubials are sourced from vineyards planted in the Vallée de l’Agly, close to the village of Maury.

The vines are, on average, 50 years old and are planted on soils of black schist and marl-clay, just over 30 miles from the Mediterranean Sea.

92 points - Joe Czerwinski
Matured entirely in demi-muids, the Grenache-dominated (90%) 2016 Roubials boasts knockout aromas of crushed stones, dried spices and black cherries. The Grenache shows its base in black schist, retaining structure and silkiness. Despite being full-bodied and enormously ripe, this finishes long, with a surprising sense of elegance."

91-94 points - Jeb Dunnuck
"The 2016 Côtes Catalanes Roubials is an old vine blend of Grenache and Syrah sourced from the Agly Valley in the Roussillon region of France. This deep purple colored beauty is a powerful, ripe, sexy beauty packed with notions of black raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with loads of dried spices, chocolate, crushed rock, and candied violets. Possessing terrific richness, a mouth filling, ripe, expansive texture, ripe tannin, and a great finish, it’s another smoking good wine from bon vivant Jean-Marc Lafage!

"Robert Parker says this is brilliant wine from the Cabirou region of Maury, which was famous for making fortified wines in the past. It consists of mostly schists and granite soils and has a slew of old wine carignan and grenache. The wines are jaw dropping good and fortunately for us wine lovers under priced compared to the great quality..."  4/5/5 Stars

"Super round and very lovely4.5/5 Stars

"Deep ruby color. Pleasant aroma rich in fruity notes. Flavor is balanced and smooth. Very easy drinking wine that does not need to be accompanied with food. Notes of black currant, vanilla and plum. Sweet wine with semi long pleasant finish4/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
