Imported especially for Vivino customers and a UK exclusive, we are delighted to be offering this gem of a wine for the bargain price of just £21.75!

The leading winery in Washington state, Château Ste. Michelle is often praised by both critics and Vivino reviewers alike for delivering high-quality wines at exceptionally good prices.

Grown in a region with the fantastic name of Horse Heaven Hills (source of grapes for some of Washington's greatest and most expensive wines), the Canoe Ridge Merlot is serious value for money.

There is a little cabernet sauvignon included and despite such a modest presence, it does help knit the fruit together and frame the black plum and cherry fruits nicely. It’s a really gorgeous, mouth-watering red that combines the best of New World ripe fruit with an old world complexity and elegance.

We rarely see wines from Washington in the UK - and when we do they tend to be rather expensive.

So don't miss out on this superb Merlot that showcases all that is good about Washingon at a fraction of the price!

About the wine

Well-known for making expressive, accessible wines, the Columbia Valley has excelled itself here. This is a refined and elegant Merlot with plenty of New World concentration but without the over-ripe jaminess that can sometimes edge into Californian wines. Complex aromas of black cherries and spice mingle with plum, herbal notes, licquorice and a touch of tobacco. This is delicious on the palate with a smooth and silky texture combining with more of the dark fruit from  the nose. The finish is dry, grippy and long with dusty, restrained tannins. Top class Washington Merlot!

2013 was a warm and consistent vintage. The grapes were destemmed at the winery and a daily gentle pump over during fermentation helped to extract the maximum amount of flavour and colour, whilst keeping harsh tannins at bay. The wine was aged for 16 months in French and American oak, 60% of which was new.

About the winery

Dating back to the repeal of prohibition, when nobody believed areas outside of California could make great wines, Chateau Ste Michelle was Washington State's founding winery.

Spurred on in the late 1960's by legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, Chateau Ste Michelle has never looked back and is now far and away Washington's premier winery, having not only been awarded 'Winery of the Year' honours more than 20 times by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

About the vineyard

Planted in 1991, the vineyard at Canoe Ridge Estate's windswept site in the Horse Heaven Hill's AVA provides Chateau Ste. Michelle with low-fertility soil, constant sun and steady winds coming up from the Columbia River- the perfect model for premium growing conditions.

Canoe Ridge Estate lies on a steep south-facing wind-swept slope on the bank of the Columbia River in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills AVA.

The site’s proximity to the river protects it from temperature extremes, allowing uniform ripening and excellent color development.

92 points - Wine Spectator
Broad and spicy, with pepper and clove overtones to the rich blueberry and currant fruit, coming together harmoniously against softly nubby tannins on the expressive finish."

91 points - Jeb Dunnuck
"An impressive wine is the 2013 Merlot Canoe Ridge Estate. There’s 5% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and it spent 16 months in 59% new French and American oak. Possessing first-rate aromatics of plums, currants, licorice and damp earth, this medium to full-bodied, supple, charming Merlot has outstanding purity and surprising mid-palate density. It’s a sexy wine to drink over the coming 4-5 years."

90 points - James Suckling
"An array of ripe, bright red plums and berries with a good serving of toasty and spicy oak. Acidity kicks in through the finish. An easygoing, approachable style."

"Love this winery and all the single vineyard wines and this is a beauty! ...Opaque black red with dark ruby rim. Fragrant nose of dark berry fruit. Fruit forward but dry! Black cherry, sweet plum, subtlety strong tannins and smooth acidity. Chocolate, coffee and some dried fig on a lingering finish!... Great Merlot! 4/5 Stars

Great terroir driven Merlot!...Fun aromas of orange zest, eucalyptus, mint, dark fruit, tobacco, leather, and spice. Full body, med tannins and acidity. Flavors actually match the aromas well with a nice long herbal and citrus finish. Very fun, interesting Merlot."  4.0/5 Stars

"Wow excellent value for money! Very elegant and vibrant nose blueberry elderberry with sublime roasted notes full body with silky texture and elegant long finish" 4.5/5 Stars

"Wow this merlot has some tannic structure. Very rich dense fruit. Dark plum, rich cherry, dark coffee, dark chocolate some oak spice...get it while you can!"  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
