Domaine de la Solitude makes "Spectacular wines from their sensational old vines" says leading wine critic Robert Parker

The La Solitude single vineyard is one of the 'Grand Cru' vineyards of Châteauneuf!

Made from 100-year-old vines, and with great scores across the board, this superb Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the wines of the vintage and a bargain at £27.49 per bottle.

This beautiful Domaine has been at the forefront of winemaking in the region since at least the 17th Century. They have had a fine series of vintages in recent years, and this is no exception.

Again according to Robert Parker: Their track record of hitting home runs for the last decade remains intact”.

About the wine

A rich and opulent wine with ripe blackcurrant aromas layered with herbal garrigue notes. Full bodied but with a soft texture on the palate; this wine retains the estate's characteristic elegance whilst embracing a modern style of winemaking. Ripe fruits combine with notes of cocoa and cherry and a hint of liquorice on the very long finish. Although this will drink for up to a decade it is extremely approachable - even enticing - now, especially if decanted first.

This superb example of classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape was made with a blend of 55% Grenache, Cinsault 10%, Mourvèdre 10% and Syrah 10%.The Grenache vines are 100 years old, giving extraordinary flavor intensity.

The ensuing blend was aged first in vat then a combination of new and used French oak barrels for 14 months. This careful treatment means the tannins are silky and accessible, yet there is plenty more ageing potential here for those with the patience and will-power to resist this already delicious wine.

About the winery

“One of the most significant estates in Châteauneuf du Pape and one of the very first to estate-bottle, the Lancon family has been producing these wines for many, many decades. They have 75 acres, with most of it situated in the widely renowned rocky plateau in the eastern part of the sector know as La Crau, the hottest, earliest-maturing sector of the appellation.” Robert Parker

We are in the presence of history at Domaine de la Solitude. Founded by the Barberini family, who included a 13th century pope, Maffeo Berberini (Urbain VIII). By the 19th century, Domaine de la Solitude had become one of the largest, quality estates in this region. By 1900, their reputation was so high they embarked on estate-bottling, an unusual step for that time. Come the 1970’s, forward-thinking Pierre Lancon took the reins and vowed to reach new pinnacles of quality. That vow is currently being fulfilled by his children: Michel and Jean Lancon, now managers of the estate.

Since 1985, there has been considerable investment in the winery. The old foudres were replaced by concrete vats and stainless steel; then, in 1996, there were further renovations and a decision was taken to use some new French oak for aging, not 100% about ten percent for a more subtle effect. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines they now produce here are widely acclaimed for their complexity and fine quality.

About the vineyard

There are 35 historic hectares at Domaine de la Solitude, “most of it situated in the widely renowned rocky plateau in the eastern part of the sector know as La Crau, the hottest, earliest-maturing sector of the appellation.” (Parker)

Ownership of these valuable vines is key to quality and the specific lieu dit called La Solitude has exceptional soil, a mix of sand, loam, clay and the pebbles which are so familiar to anyone who has visited this spectacular French region.

About the winemakers

The Lancon family are more than aware of their special responsibility for vines and vineyard practices so rooted in tradition. Maintaining exceptional standards is their aim and, according to Robert Parker, they are "hitting home runs” year after year. Each parcel and grape variety is carefully vinified separately to create the distinctive estate blend. A combination of extraordinary vineyards and continuous winery investment combines to ensure Domaine de la Solitude’s place at the top table. Their 2013 is a beautiful wine, and one that will repay a decade of ageing.

"Deep crimson. Much riper nose than most. Rich and sweet. Pretty complete. Not earthy and more on the black cherry side but this wine gives lots of pleasure. Medium persistence."  17/20 points

92 Points - Wine Spectator

A grippy style, with notes of garrigue, tobacco and chestnut leaf along the edges, keeping the core of steeped cherry and plum fruit focused and moving along. Warm stone and singed cedar details form the backdrop on the finish."

90 Points - Josh Raynolds

Full ruby. Ripe red and dark berry and vanilla scents show good energy and pick up a spicy nuance with air. Velvety and seamless on the palate, offering pliant black raspberry and cherry compote flavors plus a hint of candied flowers. Shows strong punch and cling on the smoke-accented finish, which is framed by gentle tannins that fade out quickly."

90 Points - Jeb Dunnock

A beautiful wine, especially in the vintage, the 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape was bottled last year...fermented with roughly 10% whole clusters, which is a change from past vintages. Medium-bodied, concentrated and seamless, with lots of darker berry fruits, licorice and peppery herbs/garrigue, it has solid purity and outstanding length."

"Young Chateauneuf, let it evolve for a while in the glass and discover roses and sweet red fruits on the nose. Medium body, excellent balance"  4/5 Stars

"This is one great CdeP and very hard to find outside France 4/5 Stars

"Nice stuff! This Chateauneuf has nice balance. Full of red and blue fruit, garrigue, spices, crushed rocks. Tannins are supple and round. Although a bit one dimensional at this early stage in life it is a delicious drink. This will get even better with further ageing. It will develop more licorice, bacon fat and meat stock. Will last for a decade effortlessly"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
