From the heart of the Southern Rhône comes this delicious, soft, spicy Vacqueyras - drinking perfectly right now!

Made from old vines grown on ideally situated slopes covered in round stones that reflect heat onto the grapes, (thereby ensuring perfect ripeness), this blend of Grenache and Syrah has all the quality of its neighbour Chateauneuf-du-Pape but without the same price tag!

Superb value for money at under £20 and with a 20% saving, it's the perfect summer BBQ wine!

 About the wine

Produced from old vines planted on stony soils situated between the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mt Ventoux, this delightful Vacqueyras shows an elegant touch on the nose with a complex aroma of black fruit, the classic note of 'garrigue' (dried herbs), crushed olives but also a graphite-like mineral note. On the palate it has a lovely sweetness and roundness, delicious bright cherry fruit and a touch of toast from the oak. The finish is long and soft. A stunner of a Vacqueyras!

Harvesting is done manually in late September. Winemaking is traditional - the grapes are destemmed and crushed then placed in a tank until racking. During 16 months, the wine is aged in oak barrels for maturation and bottled for optimum aging.

About the winery

The Barnier family owns and farms a considerable amount of land in the Southern Rhône where they grow grapes for their winery and a variety of plants for their nursery (the second largest in France).

Founded in 1990 by John and Nicole Barnier, Fontaine du Clos is now run by their son Jean-Francois and his wife Celine, who were the first to bottle wines at the Domaine. The nursery helps them to grow around 50 different grape varieties, many of which are used to make single varietal wines or unusual blends. These activities ensure that they have a superb understanding of every aspect of grape-growing.

About the vineyard

Located in the heart of the Southern Rhône, the wine is produced from old vines situated in a vineyard ideally located between the peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mount Ventoux, perfect for growing great quality grapes. Altitude, slope, cool winds and large pebbles (about the size of your hand) making up the soil around the vines – these ideal conditions shine through in the finished wine.

91-93 Points - Josh Raynolds
" Bright purple. Really showing its syrah today, with intense dark berry, olive, apricot and candied violet scents and a zesty, peppery overtone. Picks up a vanilla nuance with air, which adds sweetness to the deep black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors. Closes smooth and very long, with a touch of smokiness and supple tannins. I suspect that most tasters would pick this exotic wine as coming from the northern Rhone"

4/5 Stars - John Livingstone-Learmonth
dark, intense robe. The outer air of oak is sleek, with nutty, pistachio touches. There is an aroma of smooth, polished black fruit within. The palate retains a shiny front: this is oaked Vacqueyras, has a marked toasting. It will emerge as a well-knit performer. There is a lot of oak for now, but the fruit quality is good, the flavour resembling blueberry which is testament to the Syrah’s high standard"

90-92+ points - Jeb Dunnuck

"More Syrah-dominated, as well as with a modern slant, the 2012 Vacqueyras Castillon is a unique blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache that spent one year in 30% new barrels. Offering up full-bodied richness and texture, with notes of sweet cassis, melted licorice, mineral and toasty oak, it is a seamless, sexy effort that has no hard edges, solid mid-palate depth and a big finish. It should be approachable on release and evolve gracefully given its overall balance."

"Tertiary, developed and delicious. Prune, fig, tobacco & fruits of the forest. Really enjoyed this.4.5/5 Stars

"Rich with silky tannins, but extremely well balanced. Dried prunes and dark fruits. Delicious."  4.5/5 Stars

"Black cherry, blackcurrant, tar, hint of smoke and menthol. Complex mouthfeel of green peppercorns, liquorice and smoke. Firm tannins, present acidity and high alcohol. Deep inky purple body. Good stuff."  4/5 Stars

"Dark fruits, spice with lovely grip. Tannins are firm but ripe - really good with steak. Love the black cherry finish"  4/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
