"Jean-Marc Sélèque is one of the brightest young stars in Champagne!" John Gilman, View from the Cellar

Champagne is an exciting place at the moment!

Young Jean-Marc Sélèque is one of the coming stars of the grower Champagne movement, using his vineyards (including 3 classified as Premier Cru) to make lovely wines that are pure, balanced, elegant and full of charm and personality.

And wha? Their price! Despite the small amounts made and the hard work that Jean-Marc puts into each year, this non-vintage Solessence Brut is just £26.99 - a great price for a great Champagne!

Long dominated by the big houses, there is a growing movement amongst the small growers (who previously sold their grapes to the big guys) to make their own wines from their own vineyards.

These tiny production wines are made in one specific place and from specific vineyards and at their best, they retain a sense of place and terroir, something that can be lost in the big blends with their grapes sourced from anywhere up to 80 vineyards.

About the wine

Lovely biscuity notes on the nose, with hints of lemongrass, citrus, spices and an unmistakable freshness. A very fine mousse leads into a palate that is wonderfully balanced, light, yet creamy, with lots of fruit and with a long, mineral finish. A very flexible wine that is great on its own, as well as with many different styles of food.

The Sélèque Solessence Brut is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir from the terroirs of Pierry, Moussy, Epernay, Mardeuil, Dizy, Vertus and Boursault. This is made from the estate's young vines, which average 35 years old (equivalent to many others' old-vine selection).

Each vineyard plot is vinified seperately and 90% of the wines undergo fermentation and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, with the other 10% are fermented in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation.

A large proportion of each release (up to 50%) is made up of reserve wines that are stored in large tanks and wooden casks as a perpetual reserve that was started in 2000. This ensures that each non-vintage release matches up to Jean-Marc's approval.

Jean-Marc's belief is one of minimal intervention and the wines are not fined and only lightly filtered. Finally, they are aged on their lees for 18-20 months to add complexity.

About the winery

Located in the town of Pierry in the Coteax Sud d'Epernay, the story of the House of Sélèque began in 1965 when Henri Sélèque first planted vines with his father-in-law, Pierry legend, Jean Bagnost. In 1974 Henri's son gained his degree in enology and then took over the domaine.

Fast forward to 2008 and fresh from travelling the world working at esteemed wineries such as Chandon's Napa Valley facility and Yarra Valley, Jean-Marc Sélèque , son of Henri, returned to Pierry to take over the family business.

After learning the many dos and don'ts of wine making he set about turning the domaine more towards the organic viticulture that he envisoned. In 2010 he started working biodynamically and now 19 acres of the winery are farmed in his way.

About the vineyard

The vineyards currently represent 7.5 hectares of vines across seven villages in the Marne valley and the Côte des Blancs slopes, three of which are classified as Premier Cru (Pierry, Dizy, Vertus). The grape varieties are dominated by Chardonnay (60%), followed by Pinot Meunier (30%) and Pinot Noir (10%).

Jean-Marc ploughs his vineyard to encourage root development and microbial life in the soil. He also believes in preventive measures to combat disease and favour balance and biodiversity. The farming is carried out by a team of five people throughout the year.

92 Points - James Suckling
Really attractive tropical chardonnay with mango and papaya notes. This has plenty of energetic fruit and speaks of good ripeness. The palate has more biscuity and spicy flavors. Extremely supple and smooth, with great depth and balance."

92 Points - John Gilman
The Solessence Brut NV delivers lovely aromatic complexity in its blend of apple, pear, meunier floral tones, brioche, chalky minerality, almond and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and complex, with a fine core, pinpoint bubbles, fine focus and grip and a long, well-balanced and still youthful finish. This is a beautiful bottle of bubbly... Jean-Marc Sélèque is one of the brightest young stars in Champagne! Fine, fine non-vintage Brut."

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
