Awarded ‘First Growth’ status by Master of Wine Tim Atkin in his definitive South Africa Report, there’s an exciting energy fuelling the wines of the historic Klein Constantia estate.

With a history dating back 331 years, Klein Constantia are proving that this magnificent, cool-climate estate is a top producer of Sauvignon, Bordeaux reds … and Trophy-winning sparkling wine!

Awarded a Gold Medal and 'Best South African Sparkling Wine' at the World Championships for Champagne & Sparkling Wine, this wine is truly showing its class – a fine gentle mousse, delicate biscuity, brioche aromas and bright, citrusy and green apple notes.

A beautifully balanced, long-flavoured Méthode Traditionelle worthy of this ‘First Growth’ Estate and an absolute bargain at just £16.50 a bottle..!

About the wine

Champagne’s classic Chardonnay grape is the only variety used in Klein Constantia’s MCC Brut, sourced from a single block, but harvested on different dates to provide a whole palette of flavours to blend with – from deep ripe fruit to the freshest acidity. Light and bright in appearance, the nose displays fresh minerality and flinty expressive notes with buttery brioche characters, followed by a slight green apple and citrus aroma. The palate is focused and defined with a mineral backbone and a fine mousse. With a fresh acidity, the wine concludes with a zesty and toasty finish. Delicious drinking now, but will also gather further richness with ageing.

Méthode Cape Classique is the South African parlance for the Champagne method that produces the finest sparkling wine in the world.

All importantly the secondary fermentation takes place in bottle. It’s a labour-intensive process, requiring a daily rotation of bottles as the wine ages on its lees and individual handling when it comes to the all-important disgorgement.

Free-run juice, nine months ageing in barrel and 20 months ageing on lees before disgorgement – these are the top credentials of this superb quality, excellent value sparkler with its delicious toasty complexity and length.

About the winery

Klein Constantia is a remarkable estate that was once part of the 1685 farm that was established by Simon Van der Stel. He recognised the huge potential of the soils and adopted 900 hectares of land for his property – almost a whole valley. It produced then the remarkable Vin de Constance that became the most sought-after fine wine in the world, adored by Napoleon, Frederick the Great, Louis XVI, the Russian Royal Family, poet Baudelaire, Dickens and Jane Austen, who recommended it for soothing a broken heart.

The grand estate spiralled into decline when phylloxera decimated vineyards, but the Jooste family took ownership in the 1980s and once more built it up and revived the great Vin de Constance.

However, it is the newest owners – financiers with heart Zdenek Bakala and Charles Harman – who have done most to lift the estate and its wines to the grand heights they now occupy. They have carried out a major refurbishment of the cellars for a gentler treatment of grapes and wine, and made substantial investment in the vineyards to ensure a prosperous future. Their clear intent is to make the finest wine in the world, not just South Africa!

About the vineyard

Klein Constantia’s vineyards lie on the slopes of the Constantiaberg mountain (part of the Table Mountain range).

The pristine Chardonnay grapes for the estate’s award-winning sparkler come from the warmer lower slopes, with its well-drained sandy soils, which lends excellent intensity of flavour to the wine.

"Pale golden colour. Small bubbles, very smooth and elegant. Minerality but more the gravel type, subtle. Medium - light acidity. Rather shy on the nose perhaps of mango, warm tropical fruits. Toasty, no pun intended. Easy drinking"  4/5 Stars

"Fresher and brighter than its French champagne pairing counterpart!"  4/5 Stars

"Dry and fruity enough, perfect bubbles. Delicious!"  4/5 Stars

"One of South Africa's best bubbles! "  4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
