Our offer of Oak Valley's Stone & Steel Riesling was so well received and we love the wines so much that we have decided to offer another of their wines, the delicious 2014 Elgin Chardonnay

Entirely under the radar, Oak Valley are due for great things, creating stunning wines at superb prices.

This beautiful, cool-climate Chardonnay has a lovely succulence and the fruit is rich with praline and buttery notes but there’s terrific, enlivening zest too.

It is quite clearly a great wine in its own right but if we were to make comparisons...think of a blend between the nutty opulence of Meursault and the elegant raciness of Puligny-Montrachet!

However, quite unlike either of those Burgundies, the fantastic Oak Valley Chardonnay is available for just £16.95 per bottle.

An incredible price for wine of this quality!

About the wine

This succulent Chardonnay has enticing green apple, pear, citrus, cool lime and lemon fruit and an overwhelmingly elegant feel. The 2014 vintage is a vintage defined by its minerality and freshness and for that reason there was more judicious use of oak than in previous vintages. Oatmeal and hazelnut add complexity to the balanced finish.

The wine is fermented in barrel and spends nine months, being stirred once a month. For the first time, a portion of the juice was fermented in tank and used in the final blend in order
to achieve a greater level of freshness. The wine was matured for nine months in 30% new French oak using 300 litre hogsheads while the remainder was in second and third full barrels.

About the winery

Oak Valley Estate was founded in 1898 by Sir Antonie Viljoen, medical doctor and farmer extraordinaire with a deep love of the English oak tree of which he planted large forests at the estate. His will specifies that no future inheritor of the property be allowed to cut then down and today there are over 4000 oak trees covering 30 hectares. No prizes for guessing where the property name comes from!

The property is still family run and today there are 48 hectares of vineyards planted across the cool climate Elgin region

About the vineyard

Oak Valley’s vineyards are stretched across the Elgin region, statistically the coolest in South Africa. The benefit of the cool climate is that the grapes spend a longer time attached to the vine, thus giving the fruit enhanced flavours.

The soils are from ancient Bokkeveld shale and are predominantly reddish-brown, iron-rich and gravelly.

"A characterful nose full of nuts and caramel melded with smoky granitic notes. Hints of lemon butter and white peach opulence come through the tangy acidity. This has super depth, a herbal touch and vibrant honeyed spice."

"Two sites are combined to produce this enjoyable Chardonnay, which includes vines planted in 1992. It’s a classic Elgin style, with fresh acidity supporting stone fruit and citrus flavours, complemented by refined oak."

90 Points - Neal Martin
"The 2014 Chardonnay has a resinous, waxy bouquet that is nicely defined - nutmeg and almond, touches of walnut coming through with aeration. The palate is well defined with a fine line of acidity, just a touch of passion fruit and orange infusing the citrus fruit, with commendable tension on the finish. This is recommended."

Gold Medal & Regional Trophy - DWWA 2015
"
A masterclass in South African Chardonnay, with forthcoming notes of lemon zest, nuts, spice and subtle, creamy leesy aromas. It then moves on to a layered, glistening palate which has grip, tangy citrus acidity, layers of fruit and oak, and glorious persistence."

"An elegant Chardonnay from Elgin, delicately wooded and fresh. Notes of apple, citrus, vanilla and hazelnut.4/5 Stars

"Delicious! South African Chardonnay is on fire at the moment! Beautiful rich, complex, buttered brioche notes are balanced superbly by an orange peel and lime citrus note, which leads on to a long lingering yet clean finish. Highly recommended!"  4/5 Stars

"Rich citrus, pear and flint. Good mouthfeel achieved. Underlying acidity keeps it fresh. Recommended!" 4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
