French elegance, German technology, Grapes from Friuli.

This is the foundation of the Schiopetto style - wines that are elegant and refined, that clearly express their grapes and terroir and that use the most modern technology to ensure that the wines are as good as they can possibly be.

Friuli has a reputation for top-quality Merlot and the brilliant Schiopetto team have maximised their wine-making knowhow to the full and combined it with top-quality fruit in this much-loved red made from 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon to give it some structure and backbone.

From the 2012 vintage, this is now mature and drinking perfectly. The oak, tannin and fruit have all integrated and created a rich but elegant red that is laden with ripe plum, spice, liquorice and peppery fruits. It's a bit of a stunner!

Discounted by 17%, we are offering the 2012 Rivarossa to you today for £19.75an excellent price for this Bordeaux blend. As one Vivino user commented “it’s a powerful wine with intense aromas of black liquorice, dark cherries and plum tomatoes. I’m so happy I took a chance on this. I highly recommend it.”

We say, follow the advice and give it a go!

“A brilliant producer...Schiopetto continues to satiate the olfactory senses and palate with his extraordinary offerings" Robert Parker

About the wine

Ruby red in the glass, the 2012 Rivarossa has complex aromas of black cherry and red berries nicely complemented by notes of tobacco, liquorice and black pepper. Sophisticated, soft and suave, the palate is beautifully rounded with ripe, elegant tannins and plenty of smoky plum fruit. The finish is long and fresh with a delicious spicy note. After 6 years in bottle, this wine has integrated nicely and is starting to show some tertiary notes but without having lost any of its ripe primary fruit. Absolutely perfect for drinking now!

First made in 1968, this iconic red from the Schiopetto estate is a blend of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet sauvignon. The grapes are picked by hand, destemmed and then fermented separately. The length of maceration and vinification techniques will vary depending on the vintage and the condition of the grapes but fermentation typically lasts between ten and fifteen days and takes place in large wooden vats. The wine is then aged in a combination of 225 and 500 litre oak barrels for 15 months.

About the winery

Mario Schiopetto, son of Angela and Giorgio, was born in 1930 and grew up in the Fireman’s Hostelry which belonged to the family, experiencing in first person the life of a fireman and then that of a lorry driver. For years he accompanied and helped his father to select the wines for the Hostelry, eventually running it himself after the demise of his parents.

Entirely self-taught and with superb intuition for wine-making, Mario travelled to Germany and France to explore the wines made there. Eventually it was German technology aided by French finesse that enabled him to live his dream. Guided only by his personal taste and his love for wine, in 1965 he brought out his first “Tocai” and soon became known as the founding father of modern wine making in Friuli.

After his death in 2003, Mario's children, Maria Angela, Carlo and Giorgio,  took over the running of the winery.

About the vineyard

The property’s red grapes are grown in the Blumeri vineyards in the Oleis cru in the Colli Orientali del Friuli. There are eight hectares of vineyards in total, planted on clay-dominated soil that is particularly suitable for the merlot and cabernet sauvignon grapes. Harvesting is done by hand.

"
This is spicy and dense with an attractive character of light prune, walnut, tobacco and clove. Full body, firm and chewy tannins and a fresh finish. I like the chewy texture contrasting the ripe fruit. Impressive Bordeaux blend."

"
Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, rose petals, tobacco and licorice meld together in the 2012 Rivarosso Rosso, Schiopetto's 90% Merlot/10% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The 2012 is dark, rich and meaty, with plenty of depth and overall intensity"

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
