Mature white Rioja is one of the world's great wines, so when we were offered a small parcel of perfectly mature Viñas de Gain Blanco from the famous Artadi winery, we jumped at the chance!

Wines like these are normally drunk on release despite their fantastic abilty to age, so to find some perfectly in its drinking window is a rare treat indeed.

Artadi are one of the Rioja region (and Spain's) top winemakers with a string of glorious red wines to their name. But they also make this incredible white from their superb terroir located at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains.

Full of life and energy on release, this 2010 Viñas de Gain Blanco still retains some of the beautiful fruit that was the hallmark of the excellent 2010 vintage, but time has mellowed it into a complex, rich beauty that simply spreads across the palate in a riot of flavour before a fresh finish that seems never-ending.

Very few people get to try wines like this at their peak. Don't miss out on the chance to be one of them...

About the wine

The aging abilty of white Rioja is legendary and this is no exception. Bang in the middle oif its drinking window, this is absolutely magical wine.

Given its age, there is still a surprising amount of waxy fruit on the nose, chiefly orange and grapefruit, but this is mingled with the complex aromas that come with age - toast, honey, butter, spice - every time you go back to the glass there seems to be something new. Silken on the palate, the wine has a wonderfully broad texture that fills the mouth with an unctuous richness. Deep and rounded, there's a fresh acidity that keeps it in balance and makes it wonderfully drinkable.

This is great white Rioja at its peak and although it will hold at this level for a couple more years, we'd recommend drinking it soon - its hard not to!

Artadi work sustainably so a minimum of pesticides and fertilizers were used, The grapes were picked manually and the must was fermented in oak for just over a month before the wine rested for a luxurious two years on the lees - which accounts for its rich complexity.

About the winery

Located in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa), Artadi has faultlessly risen from being a cooperative making traditional young wines for the local market to becoming a winery producing an impeccable range of wines based on varied terroir and vineyards.

The man behind this transformation is Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, a highly respected personality in the world of Spanish wine. His obsession with quality led him to explore the potential of terroir and to vinify the old cooperative vineyards based on their soils, aspects and altitudes. The winery owns 85 hectares of vineyards.

Attention to detail are watchwords at Artadi and this is evident at every point in their winemaking - from vineyard care to designing their own vats to ensure optimum fermentation and maturation.

The result has been some of Spain's greatest wines, especially from the single vineyard El Pison - responsible for some incredible wines, including one 100 Parker point legend.

In 2015, Artadi left the Rioja appellation, believing their rules to be too restrictive.

About the vineyard

The vines for the Viñas de Gain Blanco are actually grown intermixed with the red grapes in Artadi's old vineyards in Laguardia.

The soils here are argilo-calcareous and the vineyards are located between 450 and 700 meters altitude.

"Extremely subtle and elegant, with some complex notes of dried flowers, chamomile and apples. It has great acidity, a compact, velvety palate with imperceptible oak. Drink 2014-2020"

"Greenish straw. Lovely waxy nose. Real integrity. Such bite! Attractive bitterness on the end. Drink 2016-2020"

Joanna Simon Food & Wine - Nov 2017
"...a supple, complex, buttered-cinnamon-toast of a wine with yellow plum, nectarine and citrus flavours and spicy, slightly ozony freshness. You can drink it now – with, for example, pork, poultry, cheese or creamy dishes – or keep it (in cellar conditions) for four or five more years"

"This is really delicious. 100% Viura from the ever-stylish Artadi. Deep green gold in colour. Blind the nose reminds me of white Bordeaux with that grapefruit and citrus fruit character but then the weight and richness kicks in and there is only one place you can be. Very little oak here but lots of batonnage giving richness and matter to the palate which is long and both broad and focused. Amazing youth given this is already 8 years old. I would happily keep it for another 5 or 6 maybe 10 years"  4/5 Stars, August 2018

"Lovely. Dark yellow colour. Quite a savoury nose, no obvious fruity notes, but mineral notes to taste. Clean crisp and well balanced"  4/5 Stars, October 2016

"This is the kind of wine you know is great on the first sip, outstanding and expressive Viura, enjoyable, unctuous, silky with white fruit and toasted notes, leaves a sensation of wanting more and more. Golden with yellowish hues, light medium body. On the nose is expressive full of white fruit and toasted notes. On the palate is so enjoyable, silky, unctuous, great off dry attack, great acidity, outstanding white fruit and toasted notes. A long lingering finish with pleasant and refreshing fruit notes"  4/5 Stars, May 2017 (2008 vintage)

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
