The ancient estate of Frescobaldi’s CastelGiocondo in Tuscany is undoubtedly considered to be one of Italy's finest red wines.

Even though Brunello di Montalcino quietly slips under the radar of many wine enthusiasts, the wines produced here easily compete alongside the likes of the finest Barolo, Barbaresco and Amarone.

Consistently rated 90+ points by the world’s most highly regarded critics, CastelGiocondo provides fantastic quality, excellent value and an uncompromising insight into the finest expression of Italy’s iconic Sangiovese grape variety. If you’ve yet to discover Brunello di Montalcino, then CastelGiocondo will not let you down...

Rated a superb 4.2 out of 5 stars by over 1000 Vivino reviewers, the 2014 Brunello is a work of art. Soft and supple, with incredibly pure fruit and great concentration, it is approachable now with a good decant, but will only improve over the coming years.

About the wine

An intense ruby red in colour, the wine shows clearly defined aromas of raspberry and pomegranate, which are further enriched by elegant floral notes. On the palate, the CastelGiocondo Brunello 2012 is harmonious and well-defined wine with elegant tannins and a definite minerality on the long finish. This is a very attractive wine and one that is definitely approchable now with a couple of hours in a decanter. However, it will be long-lived and will continue to improve.

The 2012 vintage was noteworthy for the high temperatures and limited rainfall during the dry summer months, which encouraged a harmonious development of the grapes.  Although the harvest was quite long, the grapes remained in perfect health throughout. The sunlight and warmth of 2012 imparted CastelGiocondo wines with extraordinary potency and richness.

Like all Brunello di Montalcinos, CastelGiocondo cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest. During this time the wine needs to be aged for at least two years in oak, followed by at least four months in bottle. This extended ageing period provides accessibility in its youth, without losing the ability to mature further. This 2012 was actually matured for 4 years in total before release

About the winery

The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of Italy's oldest estates and one of the most significant wine producers in Italy. For 700 years the Frescobaldi family have combined tradition, experience and innovation with creativity and the pursuit of excellence.

The family has always looked to develop and celebrate the diversity of Tuscany’s terroir. Being proud owners of some of the greatest vineyards in this region they have always sought to maintain the identity and autonomy of each property. Frescobaldi represents the true diversity of Tuscany and its six estates, Nipozzano, CastelGiocondo, Pomino, Ammiraglia, Castiglioni and Remole, are all located in the most suitable areas for the production of fine wines. True Tuscan legends such as Ornellaia & Masseto are also part of the Frescobaldi Group.

About the vineyard

The estate of Castelgiocondo is located in the southwest of Montalcino, an ideal terroir for Sangiovese and for the great wines that are produced here. The vineyards are found at the perfect altitude between 300 and 400 metres with well-drained soils and sunny, favorable southwest exposure. In the vineyards extreme care is given to the vines. High density and low production make a great Brunello di Montalcino of incredible texture and marvelous depth and longevity!

Aromas of ripe strawberries and spicy tea follow through to a full body, chewy and polished tannins and a succulent finish. Balanced and pretty."

"
Fresh, alluring aromas of wild berry, pressed violet, dark baking spice and a whiff of new leather all come together in the glass. The firm full-bodied palate offers ripe black cherry, mature plum, cinnamon, licorice and a hint of tobacco. Chewy tannins and bright acidity provide support and balance."

92 Points - Monica Larner

"
The Castelgiocondo 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a soft and supple expression of Sangiovese. This oak-driven wine offers a generous bouquet that is based in part on dark cherry and primary fruit, and in part on spicy tones of toast and smoke. That said, this estate has very much redefined its use of oak and the results show much more balance and purity compared to wines made one decade ago. The brightness of the acidity also comes as a surprise given the warm vintage. That freshness is essential to the wine's aging potential."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
