“Easily one of the top estates in the Languedoc (if not southern France) erobertparker.com

With the top wine from this estate, the Closerie du Pic, having proved a great success with Vivino customers, we were keen to get hold of some more wine from the excellent Puech-Haut estate.

So we were extremely pleased to find some of their excellent value Prestige Rouge from the superlative 2015 vintage!

Highly sought-after due to the quality of the wine and the surprisingly low price tag - just £16.99 per bottle - it is a stunner of an old vine Syrah and Grenache blend from the Languedoc!

Puech-Haut is situated in Pic Saint Loup, an area that has a reputation as a source of some of the Languedoc’s most exciting wines. Yet very little leaves the shores of France - you'll understand why when you taste the Prestige Rouge!

About the wine

This luscious, generous wine is a blend of 65-80 year-old grenache with 45 year old syrah which are both fermented and aged in concrete. The wine is super-concentrated with lashings of ripe, black autumnal fruits. There’s spice, cracked pepper and herbal notes too and the overall impression is enormously seductive. At this price, it's a wine to buy by the case!

About the winery

Château Puech-Haut is owned by founder, Gérard Bru and located quite close to Pic Saint-Loup, in Saint-Drézéry, near the far western border of the Rhône valley.

Starting with a land devoid of any grapes, but a land with a fantastic terroir for vines, Gérard Bru has built what is now one of the best vineyards in the region - always with the aim to produce the best wines possible. At its heart is “Château Puech-Haut”, built from the stones of the old Prefecture of Montpellier. This was originally a residence built in Italian style between the 17th and 18th centuries but recently slated for demolition.

Gérard Bru bought the structure and then transplanted it stone by stone into the middle of his new property. During this work, he discovered an ornamental stone ram’s head from a 12th or 13th century chapel, and it became the emblem of Château Puech Haut.

About the vineyard

The wine area of Pic Saint Loup is named after the jagged, limestone mountain that sits at its centre. Here, the clay limestone and gravelly soils help the wines achieve freshness despite the southerly latitude of the vineyards.

The vines are planted at an average elevation of 120 meters and are aged between 40 and 75 years.

There are about 115 hectares of grapevines in the vineyard. The estate enjoys a very favourable Mediterranean climate along with soils of clay and limestone, topped with round pebbles, just like you find in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The grapes are chosen for how well they grow on the land (syrah and grenache are the most common), and they are cultivated according to sensible methods, without chemical herbicides. The harvest is done by hand when the grapes are at the height of their maturity.

93 Points - Jeb Dunnock
"The 2015 Saint Drezery Prestige is a ripe, sexy beauty that gives up full-bodied notes of black cherries, melted licorice and roasted herbs. Like all the wines from this estate, it has lots of richness and texture, yet stays balanced, lively and pure. It's a year in and year out value that's a no-brainer purchase. It will drink beautifully over the coming 4-5 years (possibly even longer).

"Full bodied,...smooth, blackberry, black cherry and juniper, quite smoky aftertaste, elegant and long. Extraordinary value" 4/5 Stars

"An absolute must try. Gorgeous floral nose, velvet tannins and densely layered red and black fruits. It is both bold and refined, a perfect balance.4.5/5 stars

"In the glass, a gorgeous dark red which imparts richness and jump starts the enjoyment of this wine. Delicious notes of kirsch, raspberries, plums and meat laced with pepper and herbs. The wine has a firm structure, is full with smooth tannins. The finish is long with much fruit and herbs. Excellent QPR"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
