"There can be no doubt that the son Jean-Louis, and his papa Gerard Chave, are among this planet's greatest winemakers" Robert Parker, The Worlds's Greatest Wine Estates

High praise indeed!

Arguably the Rhône's greatest winemaker and as Mr Parker points out, up there with the best on the planet, Jean-Louis Chave makes what many consider to be the greatest Hermitage wines - multiple 100 point winners that sell for hundreds of pounds per bottle.

And yet, not content with these lofty heights, Monsieur Chave has created his Selection wines as a way for consumers to experience the Chave magic at a much more accessible price.

As with all his wines, quality is pre-eminent and it shines through in this beautiful Hermitage, sourced from three unique sites on the famous Hermitage hill.

At just £34.15 per bottle (£160 less than his grand vin), this is an absolute steal and we highly recommend it to all fans of Rhône Valley reds and syrah wines.

Hermitage is renowned for delivering extremely fine and long-lived wines and it’s very rare indeed to find this sort of quality at such a reasonable price.

This is a fantastic chance to see why Chave are so highly rated - don't miss out!

About the wine

Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier wrote of the wine:

“Jean-Louis Chave, one of the wine world’s greatest living masters, has created one of the greatest values in fine wine with this “Farconnet’ bottling from Hermitage… the 2012 is a wonderful expression of everything one seeks in Chave Hermitage.” www.sommselect.com

Benchmark Hermitage, sourced from three unique sites on the Hermitage hill, Farconnet has structure, elegance and a terrific breath of flavour. The palate is layered with rich, ripe black hedgerow fruits with spice, herb and mineral notes weaving their way across the palate and lingering to the succulent finish.

When Jean-Louis Chave set about making his négociant wines he was clear that they were not to be seen as ‘second bottlings’ of the estate wines.

There would be no compromise in quality but the wines would offer a broader group of wine lovers the opportunity to enjoy the Chave experience, being offered at a considerably lower price tag than the estate’s famous Hermitage wines.

Farconnet was fermented in stainless steel and tonneaux and was then aged in barriques for between 18 and 24 months.

About the winery

In his book, “The New France”, the wine writer Andrew Jefford says of Chave,

“The Chave line, which stretches back astonishingly to 1481, could make a fair claim to be France’s winemaking royal family: in no other of France’s great terroirs is the largest individual landholder so deeply rooted in time and place, so supremely competent, and so modest a custodian of the insights and craftsmanship of the past”.

Praise indeed and you’ll find it echoed in the review of every wine critic and writer across the globe. The wines of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave are amongst the world’s very finest.

Motivated by a desire to bring their wines to an audience with pockets not deep enough for their Hermitage wines, the Chave family have developed a négociant range where the wines are made from a selection of their own grapes and some bought in from other producers.

Happily, the attention to detail and drive for quality is just as it is for the domaine’s wines .

About the vineyard

Farconnet is made from syrah grapes sourced from three individual sites on the Hermitage hill.

The greatest proportion come from Diognières, the most pebbly of the terroirs. The wines from here tend to bring spice to the wine.

Péleat wines are typically elegant; the vines a little further up the hill and grown on clay with sand and limestone.

The wines from Greffieux are the generally the most structured, coming from soils consisting of glacial river stones.

Vineyard management is absolutely meticulous, as you would expect from a name like Chave!

93 points - Josh Raynolds
Brilliant ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented dark berries, olive and licorice on the pungent nose. Subtly sweet blackberry and cherry flavors show excellent clarity and energy and pick up a sexy floral quality with aeration. Displays excellent delineation, a gracefully light touch and powerful mineral lift on the persistent, gently tannic finish, which features lingering notes of bitter cherry pit and candied violet."

17.5/20 points - Jancis Robinson
"Dark crimson. Very lively and easy initially. Firm tannins then impinge and the wine needs time but has lots of energy."

"I’m no stranger to Rhône wines but this was my first Hermitage and it just so happened to be a JL Chave... and it was awesome! 4.5/5 Stars

"Sexy smooth Hermitage. The nose was a bit muted but on the palate this one came alive. Wonderful burst of dark fruit, leather and spicy notes.4.5/5 Stars

"Near 5* northern Rhône wonder. Early light and airy red berry fruit lead off into spice, grip and dreamy finish. A true gift that keeps on giving."  4.5 / 5 Stars

"VERY enjoyable young Hermitage. Glad I have three more bottles to put away for a while. Incredible nose of dark berries, roasted meats, black pepper and exotic eastern spices. Like a bazaar in Istanbul! Medium body. Still drinking very young, but delicious nonetheless. Give it a little time to open up"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
