On offer for just £14.45 - an absolute steal - is this gorgeous, very poised Chilean Syrah from the highly-regarded Matetic estate.

When we say highly-regarded, we mean really well-thought of! Tim Atkin MW – one of the world’s leading authorities on Chile – has put Matetic in his list of Chilean ‘First Growths’. On top of that, critics around the globe have awarded the property a dazzling number of top-scores for their wines.

The Matetic style is very terroir-driven and the wines combine both a strong sense of place and of the grape variety itself. This wine has a restrained intensity; plentiful red fruits, hints of violet and pepper, all of which unravel slowly, slightly teasingly and for a lovely, long time...

The quality for price ratio here is just brilliant. Grown bio-dynamically, this cool-climate Syrah is a charmer of a wine!

About the wine

A vivid, deep red in the glass, this elegant, energetic Syrah greets you with aromas of blackberry, violets and pepper. There are also notes of chocolate and light spice from the oak ageing that add to the complexity on the nose. The palate is finely structured, with superb concentration, intensity and deep, dark notes of plum and black olive. The finish is spicy, long and lingering. This really does taste like a blend between Northern Rhone and top-notch New World Syrah but at the same time it has a character all of its own. A delightful wine for a delightful price!

The 2014 vintage began with early spring frosts that lowered yields and ultimately delivered fruit with terrific ripeness and concentration.

The winemaking process takes place in six and eight- ton capacity, open-top tanks. Some bunches were destemmed using different techniques and others have been left intact to enhance volume and complexity. The grapes underwent a cold soak prior to the wild yeast fermentation, at various fermentation temperatures. The wine was racked in selected French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aged for 14 months before bottling.

About the winery

Not yet twenty years old, Matetic Vineyards was the brainchild of Jorge Matetic who wanted to make cool-climate syrah wines on the Chilean coast. His strong belief that the combination of the cooling Pacific Ocean breezes and the ancient granitic soils were the perfect combination for delivering top-quality wines.

To realise the dream, Jorge pulled together a formidable team including: consultant Californian winemaker, Ken Bernards; viticulturist Ann Kraemer and the late Alan York who consulted in biodynamic farming.

The dream was to become one of the best cool-climate wineries with a focus on quality and excellence, delivering crafted wines that would show the potential of costal Chile. A library of rave reviews, trophies and awards are testament to Matetic’s success, as are the myriad of wine fans across the globe who love the wines.

About the vineyard

The Matetic vineyards are located in Fundo Rosario, some 75 miles from Santiago. The property has vineyards in both the Casablanca Valley and the San Antonio Valley.

Grapes for this wine are harvested from vineyard plots with two shared characteristics: both are located on slopes with different sun exposure, where the predominant soils are of granitic origin with quartzite rocks and clay, low fertility and excellent drainage. They are also managed according to organic and biodynamic principles.

The primary syrah clone is 174 which gives aromatic, balanced wines with a long, lingering finish. There is also a small amount of clone 470 that gives the wine additional concentration and silky tannins.

All 168 hectares of the Matetic vineyards are certified organic by the IMO (Institute of Marketecology). This means that instead of using fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides, the Matetic model is based on applying compost, favouring predator-prey relations and embracing the wildlife that lives in for vineyards in order that a balanced and healthy environment can be maintained.

The Matetic team also adopt biodynamic practices which sees their relationship with the land and their surrounding environment intensify further still in a bid to optimise both the wines and the long-term sustainability of the land that they currently cultivate.

91+ Points - Luis Gutierrez
"
The first Syrah I tasted was the 2014 Corralillo Syrah, which is sourced from two hillside parcels ...the nose is rather shy, and the aromas are subtle. This is consistent with the house style, as the wines are more about the palate; and they are more about the place than the different varieties but with the logical varietal character in the background. It has good freshness and tasty flavors, with very fine tannins."

"Great fruity nose, spicy nose, pepper, smokey fruit finish, good value for money 4/5 Stars

"Great Chilean Syrah from San Antonio valley. Aroma is stronger than the taste. Fruity yet not sweet, very low tannins, pleasant long lasting finish. Per our sommelier, easy to drink at any time. Cheers!"  4/5 Stars

"Beautiful deeply rich purple, full and delicious, well balanced tannins with lovely black currant tones" 4/5 Stars

"Excellent cold climate Syrah from the north of Chile. Slightly austere at first with pepper and olive notes but opens up to a plummy palate. Layered, structured and not even a tad clumsy. Very mineral. Nice wine and a must try if you're looking for an off-the-beaten-track version of this variety."  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
