Today's offer is a massively underappreciated gem!

The wines of Barbaresco, whilst still recognised as amongst Italy's best reds, are overshadowed by Barolo, their larger, more famous neighbour. As world-wide demand continues to grow for Barolo and the prices rise correspondingly, Barbaresco (also 100% Nebbiolo) becomes better and better value.

Particularly so when they are made by the likes of Michele Chiarlo! One of Piedmont's great names, the Chiarlo style is highly elegant. They make complex wines that can age for decades but above all reflect their provenance - some of the finest vineyard sites in Piedmont.

The Barbaresco Reyna is a fine example of both the Chiarlo style and Barbaresco. Its complexity, energy and finesse all clearly mark it out as a world-class wine and the equal of Barolo.

Deliciously approachable now, it's a wine that can also age beautifully and will do so for about a decade.

2013 is a great vintage in Piedmont - an epic vintage of classic proportions and superb pedigree.” Antonio Galloni

About the wine

100% Nebbiolo, the 2013 Reyna shows delicate, complex aromas from the start - pure, high-toned notes of rich, red berry fruit, plum, liquorice, violets, leather and spice. On the palate, the Reyna has beautiful, silky-soft dark fruit and a fantastic fresh acidity. Supremely balanced, it is powerful and yet also elegant. Very fine tannin frames a long, savoury finish with a floral touch. This is drinking very nicely indeed now, but should age very well for the next decade or thereabouts.

Fermentation and maceration of the grapes took place in temperature controlled tanks with daily pumping-over. The wine was matured for a minimum of 18 months in large French oak barrels followed by a further six months in bottle.

About the winery

Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's truly great winemakers. The family owns 60 hectares of vineyard in three of the classic growing areas - Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi and have access to a further 50 hectares through long-term relationships with their growers.

Michele Chiarlo first started making wine in 1956 in the Piedmont hills and 2 years later his first cru of Barolo bottled under his own name was released. For the next decade he worked tirelessly to promote the wines of the area to the wider world and was one of the first producers to promote these wines in Northern Europe and America.

In the 1990s, Michele’s two sons joined the winery: Stefano, to take care of the agricultural and oenological side, and Alberto in sales and marketing.

About the vineyard

Produced in the municipality of Barbaresco, the grapes for this wine come from the Cascina Minuto C.E.G, which includes approximately three hectares of Nebbiolo purely for the production of Barbaresco. Situated on a notable slope, the vineyard has excellent exposure to the sun.

The vines are grown in a bluish-grey calcareous marl soil, with clay, which is poor in organic substances but rich in calcium and magnesium.

"
Iris, rose petal, fresh red berry and chopped mint aromas mingle together on this stunning red. The vibrant palate delivers crushed raspberry, red cherry, baking spice and star anise. Firm polished tannins provide structure and impeccable balance."

"
Very pretty, linear fruit and tannin structure here with blueberry and spice character. Full to medium body, fruity center palate and a fruit-driven finish. Better to give this three or four years to soften and open."

"
The Michele Chiarlo 2013 Barbaresco Reyna is a savory and masculine Nebbiolo-based wine with pretty aromas of dark fruit, cola, rust, tilled earthy and autumnal leaf. The wine offers a unique aromatic profile that is interesting and compelling. The tannins are smooth, but there is enough structure here to support the overall power and balance of the vintage."

"This is a great bottle... soft tannins mature fruit, light and mellow. Nebbiolo is well developed here.. well done!4/5 Stars

"Complex on the nose, well balanced, medium acidity, good tannins, good legs, ripe red fruits taste4/5 Stars

"This is a solid 4 for me, 4.2 perhaps. It is so textbook classic. A Barbaresco for sure with the feminine rose and tea nose with a whiff of tar...This has such a sense of clarity and purity and nothing out of balance...I really like this...so bright and drinkable now"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
