Whilst Natacha Chave’s vineyard holdings in Crozes Hermitage may be rather modest -just five hectares or so - she crucially has them in some of the area's very best lieux-dits (named vineyards with specific qualities) and with a high proportion of old vines.

As a result, this Aléofane Crozes Hermitage from the brilliant 2015 vintage is a cracker of a wine and we are thrilled to be offering it today for £17.49 (a 20% saving on the UK RRP).

There’s no question that Natacha’s wines have a very distinctive style and you’ll notice the strong herbal and floral quality that lifts the characteristic syrah fruit and gives the wine an enchanting freshness and vigour all the way to the end of its lengthy finish.

It's this style and quality that has seen Natacha named one of Decanter's '6 Winemakers to Watch in the Northern Rhône'

Made in small quantities, this is a superb chance to pick up a rather exclusive wine at a very good price.

About the wine

100% syrah from some of the finest lieux-dits in Crozes Hermitage.

This Crozes from the great 2015 vintage is a very attractive, perfumed, fruit-forward wine with classical Northern Rhône notes of dark fruit, black pepper and olive, violets and cocoa - along with a distinctive herbal wildness that is a feature of all Natacha's wines. The palate is round and supple with silky black fruits and a lovely juicy acidity. Typoically for the vintage, this is drinking very well now but has all the fruit and structure to age very nicely for the next five to ten years.

Natacha Chave’s winemaking approach reflects her confidence in the quality of the grapes and she steers the winemaking with a light touch. The wine is aged in demi-muids (600 litre barrels), 15% of which are new, before being bottled.

About the winery

Natacha Chave is sister to prominent winemaker, Yann Chave who inherited his parent’s domaine. Keen to strike out on her own, Natacha identified excellent - if modest in size - vineyard plots in St Joseph and Crozes Hermitage.

Made in limited quantities, the wines have a cult following and demand is high. As Jeb Dunnuck says, “she makes a perfumed, slightly wild and certainly exotic style of wine that’s loaded with character.”

The name ‘Aléofane’ comes from a book by John MacMillan Brown regarding a fictional island where the word ‘aléofane’ translates as ‘a gem of truth’

About the vineyard

Natacha has plots in several lieux-dits of Crozes Hermitage, including Les Pichères, Les Chasselières, Les Hauts-Chassis and Bellevue. All five hectares are managed organically and certified accordingly. The average vine age is 50 years

93 points - Matt Walls, Rhône 2015 Report
“Various plots around the appellation, all destemmed, matured for 12 months in demi-muid, 15% new. An agreeably idiosyncratic nose - loganberry, clove, black pepper. Very rounded, spicy, savoury palate. Powerful, with zippy raspberry and redcurrant acidity, great finesse and style. A firecracker.”

92 Points - Andrew Jefford

Natacha Chave has crafted a beguiling red 2015 Crozes from her Chassis vineyards: sweet-fruited, fresh and floral in scent, and almost juicy at first on the palate – then the tight-knit, close-weave tannins begin to make themselves felt, and the wine finishes with ample density as well as innate freshness and poise.  Beautifully judged"

90 Points - Jeb Dunnock

An exotic, perfumed beauty, the 2015 Crozes Hermitage gives up notes of pit fruits, mint, basil, exotic flowers and pepper in a medium to full-bodied, fresh, yet nicely concentrated style. It has tons of charm and I suspect will drink nicely on release."

4.5/5 Stars - John Livingstone-Learmonth

Blueberry fruit comes with smoky toasting and the south – black olives, gorse flowers. The palate starts tightly, with a sleek quality in the fruit, grilling towards the finish. The length is good, with freshness as it closes. This has good structure, is perhaps from the northern zone with a fine-ness of approach."

"Beautiful 100% Shiraz from a beautiful producer Natacha Chave. From a well known wine making family, arguably the dark sheep in the family - Madame Chave makes this northern Rhône Shiraz with elegance, beauty and finish"  4/5 Stars

"Appearance: deep ruby colour. Nose: perfumed nose evoking red and dark fruits. Palate: full bodied rich and concentrated with a high acidity, low tannins. Showing notes of dark berries, game and peppers"  4.5/5 Stars

"Gorgeous aromatics here, had me from the get go; Ripe blackberry, dark cherry, some floral lift, olive tapenade, smoked paprika, white pepper and charred meat. The palate is vibrant and juicy, with featherweight tannins and judicious length. Cracking drinking"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
