The 2016 Beaujolais Côte de Brouilly from Nicole Chanrion is seriously good wine!

2016 was a great vintage , possibly even eclipsing the 2015 vintage (itself meant to have been the best since the 1940s).

So when this brilliant vintage is combined with grapes from one of the best of the 10 Beaujolais Cru and a winemaker known as the “the Boss of the Côte" for her sheer ability to make great wines, magic happens...

Nicole Chanrion has created a beautiful Beaujolais, one full of pure, vibrant red fruit that combines with richness, finesse and a silky smooth texture.

This is Beaujolais that can stand its ground with the great wines of the world - and all for just £15.25 per bottle.

This is, without a doubt, one of France's greatest value wines!

About the wine

Winemaker and property owner, Nicole Chanrion is well-known for her attentive work in both the vineyard and winery and this wine is a testament to her considerable efforts. Ever since taking over the family winery, she has worked all 6.5 hectares entirely by herself, from pruning the vineyards and driving the tractors to winemaking and bottling.

An attractive ruby red in the glass, the 2016 is a little reticent at first but some air helps coax it out of the glass with aromas of pure red fruit - strawberry and cherry - mixing with some liquorice, floral notes and a smoky, savoury note. We loved the powerful, vibrant palate with its silky smooth fruit, richness and finesse. Subtle tannins and a touch of spice combine on the very long finish. A superb Beaujolais and a prime example of just how good Gamay can be!

Give this a decent decant if you are going to drink this now and it will be wonderful. Alternatively, it has the power and balance to age nicely.

The grapes are hand harvested and the techniques in the cellar are purely traditional. Fermentation is 100% whole cluster with natural yeasts. The grapes are pressed, and the juice is put back to finish alcoholic fermentation (15-20 days).  The wine is then racked into large oak foudres where it ages for at least nine months before an unfiltered bottling.

About the winery

In 2000, Nicole Chanrion was elected president of the Côte-de-Brouilly appellation which, if nothing else, says a lot about the respect that her peers hold for her. She is also, rumour has it, referred to as “La Patron de la Côte” which translates as “the Boss of the Côte’!

It’s respect that’s well deserved and been hard earned. When she took over the family domaine in the late 1980s women weren’t necessarily seen as ‘vigneron’ in the sense of making wine from the vineyard all the way through the winery to bottling. Women oenologists maybe, but not ‘vigneron’. Nicole Chanrion is though, every inch a vigneronne! She tends the domaine’s 6.5 hectares pretty much single handedly from pruning to canopy management, winemaking and bottling.

She has complete control over every aspect of the growing and winemaking process and when help arrives at harvest time, she oversees this process too.

About the vineyard

The Domaine de la Voûte des Crozes vineyards are planted on the blue schist and volcanic rock soils on the slopes of Mount Brouilly, a prehistoric volcano and one of the 10 Beaujolais Crus.

These rocky, stony soils give taut, structured wines with pronounced minerality and superb ageing potential

93 Points - Josh Raynolds

Vivid ruby. Red berry liqueur, floral and incense aromas, along with hints of allspice, licorice and smoky minerals. Silky and seamless on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry, cherry, spicecake and lavender flavors that deepen and become spicier with air. Smoothly balances richness and finesse and closes with strong, mineral-driven intensity, subtle tannins and excellent length."

92 Points - James Suckling
Very plush, smooth and supple with a flinty edge. Has a palate with a smooth, succulent and juicy mouthfeel. A really fresh and gently spicy finish. Drink or hold."

91 Points - Neal Martin

...There is something gentle and understated on the nose at first, and then it gradually opens with red cherries, crushed strawberry and hints of orange blossom. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, very good depth and cohesion with a natural, refined, lightly spiced finish that will have you immediately beckoning for another sip. Excellent—this is even better than the 2015."

"Really liked this, good acidity, well balanced. Plum, cranberry ,and raspberry. Not too heavy. Good tannins. Some herbalness."  4/5 Stars

"Classic Beaujolais color. Lovely nose of pure Gamay grace. Superb fruit. Solid body with angular fruit and steely tannins."  4/5 Stars

"Wow... I am no gamay expert but this wine was so lovely.4.5/5 Stars

"Lovely, especially for the price point. Ripe raspberry, bruised strawberry, a hint of earthiness to it too. Bright and refreshing with a hint of sweetness."  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
