Ranked number 1 by Decanter magazine in a tasting of 88 other wines from the region, the 2014 Femina from Cantine Patria is a superb wine!

Imported especially for Vivino customers, it is not available anywhere else in the UK and for just £13.99 represents a fantastic bargain!

This is a region that is steadily gaining a serious reputation for its beautifully pure, terroir-driven wines that take their character from the unique volcanic soils - and yet the prices remain eminently reasonable.

Decanter wrote that "If you like the expression of pinot noir and the character of nebbiolo, try these'. We think you'll love it!

About the wine

Aged for one year in Slavonian oak barrels, this wine is a blend of two grape varieties that are indigenous to Sicily and which have found their home on the slopes of Etna; nerello mascalese and nerello cappuccio.

Nerello mascalese (confusingly, also sometimes referred to as nerello calabrese) is a quality grape capable of making long-lived wines with real finesse and elegance. Given its strong sensitivity to site, some draw comparisons with pinot noir. The colour and aromas of the wine are often delicate with violet flowers and red fruited notes not uncommon. The palate is often herbal, earthy and spicy.

Nerello cappuccio is a more overt and generous variety; lower in acidity and with more immediate fruit, it makes a great partner to mascalese.

2014 was a superb vintage for Etna reds and the wines are outstanding.

About the winery

Winemaker, Patria Francesco Di Miceli took hold of the family cooperative in 1998 and has revolutionised the work done here.

The winery has been updated and whilst the traditional ways of winemaking have not been forgotten, they have been expertly blended with modern techinques and equipment. The winemaking style allows for all the fragrant aromas of the grapes to be retained and, where appropriate, also allows for separate vinification of individual plots and vineyard sites. This modernisation has allowed the winery to discover much more of the fantastic Etna terroir and to express that in their wines.

About the vineyard

What makes the wines of Etna so special is the unique volcanic terroir.

The active volcano has a strong and varied influence on the soils here with vines sinking their roots in to the dense and pumice-laden soil through to altogether much lighter, sandier beds. Consequently, getting to know the wines of Etna is a thrilling experience, with a gamut of styles to enjoy.

"A powerful nose of Coca cola, caramel and treacle with spices and herbs thrown in. Cedar, orange and lemon rind entwined with cloves. Complex, like Primitivo but much lighter on palate. Very interesting, very thoughtful!"

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
