"A terrific offering... I recommend buying this great value wine by the case"  robertparker.com

We are delighted to be offering this thrilling wine to you today with a great 19% saving!

£22.95 for a Super-Tuscan of this quality and value is a terrific price and worth every penny.

Hailing from the famed region of Bolgheri and situated just down the road from the world-famous Ornellaia, Volpolo is a blend of cabernet sauvignon (70%) with merlot and petit verdot making up the remaining third.

Aged in French oak, this is a dark, rich, concentrated wine with bold ripe fruit and a stunning silky texture. A clear example of just how good the land here is for growing these grape varities.

From the excellent 2015 vintage, this is a wine with a good life ahead of it, although it is delicious drinking right now!

About the wine

This is a stunning red from one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions. Deep violet in the glass, the nose is complex with real depth and elegance. Notes of blackcurrant, mint, cedar and tobacco are framed by spicy vanilla from the oak aging. On drinking, the wine has great depth and concentration with beautifully ripe, dark fruit joining silky, elegant tannins. A long, juicy and enjoyable finish is packed full of spice and sweet oak. If you intend to drink this now, and it's hard not to, give it a good few hours in a decanter to allow it to open up and strut its stuff. If not, then it will have a long and fruitful life.

The wine is a blend of three varieties: cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot, all sourced from various plots across the estate. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with a long maceration. Malolactic fermentation follows in French oak and the wine is matured for 14 months in barriques and tonneau with 6 months of bottle refinement before release.

About the winery

When one-time engineer, Massimo Piccin, got the chance to live the dream and make fine wine, he seized the opportunity with both hands. He knew how great the wines of Bolgheri were and set about joining the elite band of winemakers who have put the region on the map of the world’s finest wines.

Bordeaux varieties excel in Bolgheri and with the assistance of wine consultant, Carlo Ferrini and lots of soil and vineyard analysis, a plan for Podere Sapaio was made. Plantings began in 2000 and in a relatively short time frame, the estate established itself as a serious, quality producer.

Over time some of the plantings have changed and new vineyards have been bought. Investment has also been made in the winery and it’s now fully modernised. Massimo’s dream was to make top-quality, complex and long-lived wines and today he and his team continue to learn and strive for greater quality with every vintage.

About the vineyard

Podere Sapaio has 25 hectares of vineyards planted between the municipalities of Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona. The soils are clay and sandy loam. All of the vineyards were planted between 2000 and 2005 at a density of 7,500 vines per hectare and using wooden trellising. The vines are double-cordon trained, 40 to 50cm from the ground.

Bolgheri is famous for its red wines made from Bordeaux varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot and Sapaio are committed to giving these international varieties a distinctive regional voice. Attentive work in the vineyard is very much a part of this; being mindful of the environment and allowing the grapes to fully express their unique home.

For owner, Massimo Piccin, Bolgheri is “a unique land, an exceptional terroir, a DOC celebrated all over the world. A place where wine breathes the sea air and the breeze whispers poems.”

"Fresh blackcurrant character as well as minerals, jasmine and some eucalyptus. Full-bodied with grippy tannins and a juicy, driven finish"

92 points - International Wine Report
"The 2015 'Volpolo' is yet another outstanding showing from Massimo Piccin. Displaying a dark, inky color, this opens to inviting aromas of blackberries and dark cherries woven together with violet, tobacco, spices and crushed stones all taking shape. The palate is full, with excellent overall poise and balance, backed by a lovely velvety texture continues through the finish. While its youth is evident now, this is a beautifully made wine and I expect it to flesh out beautifully over the next few years."

17+ points - Jancis Robinson
"Impenetrable purple ruby. Concentrated, suave nose of dark fruit, cassis and with a hint of chalk and raw meat, Ripe but well defined dark fruit with a big charge of muscular tannins. Long, lots of depth and with tannins that are still a little demanding right now. Embryonic"

91 points - Monica Larner
"Here's a dark and beautifully rich value wine from the coast of Tuscany. The 2015 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Merlot and Petit Verdot. This is a terrific offering with black fruit, sassy spice and many layers of thick and luscious darkness. All that ripe fruit is nicely walled in by the wine's natural structure. I recommend buying this great value wine by the case, not by the bottle."

"Great Italian red. Full bodied and delicious" 4/5 Stars

"I really enjoyed this, the palate has cedar, earthy dark fruit, graphite and after an hour decanted, complimentary deep rooted tannins. At the price for Bolgheri I would repeat every week."  4/5 Stars

"Really enjoyed: nose is typical super Tuscan, taste mint, fruit, very interesting"  4.5/5 Stars

"Loved, loved, loved this wine! If you like big, dry well-balanced cabernets, this is the wine for you! The old world style definitely comes through, yet it is young and approachable. Drank well after an hour of decanting"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
