Alfredo Arribas, creator of Portal del Priorat, is a true renaissance man!

Not content with being a renowned architect he has turned his hand to wine-making, searching out old, forgotten vines in the mountainous terrain of Priorat.

Once famous for its wines, Priorat fell into obscurity before being revived by pioneer winemakers in the latter part of the twentieth century, attracted by its fantastic slate soils and its ancient Grenache and Carignan vines growing on incredibly steep slopes.

Now Priorat is recognised as making some of the greatest wines in Spain and Alfredo is at the forefront of this revival, producing wines of great complexity and elegance.

His Somni is made from a selection of vines that yield the most concentrated grapes, vines whose berries mature more slowly due to their excellent adaptation to the terroir. The result is a Priorat of great depth and concentration yet silkiness and elegance - a very unusual combination for the region.

Along with his winemaker, Joan Asens, who used to work for Álvaro Palacios (whose wines sell for up to £750), they are making some of Priorat's best and most interesting wines and are regularly recognised by the critics - and indeed Vivino reviewers, who have given the 2014 Somni 4.2 out of 5 stars!

About the wine

Mainly made from Carignan, with some Syrah, the Somni aims for maximum concentration in both colour and density. It is a big, rich, ripe wine that jumps out of the glass with aromas of smoke, red berry fruit and cherry entwined with notes of herb, spice and a mineral earthiness. Full-bodied on the palate, it has great concentration and wonderfully deep, ripe fruit. Unusually for a Priorat, it has a silky elegance that glides into a long, spicy finish.

The grapes for Somni were hand harvested from the second week of September to first week of October. They wer fermented and aged in French oak for 12 months.

About the winemaker

Alfredo Arribas is something of a Priorat superstar, having gained nationwide renown as an architect before turning his hand to winemaking. He has brought an entirely new philosophy to the wines of Priorat, creating wines of great precision and purity whilst maintaining all the power of the 80 + year old vines at his disposal. Alfredo is a man with a vision, having designed a state of the art winery he has managed to seamlessly merge the best of the old Priorat with all that modern technology has to offer. His efforts here and in the neighbouring Montsant have caught the eye of many of the wine press’s top writers and critics, who year upon year score his wines amongst the highest in the country.

About the vineyard

Clos del Portal comprises 40 hectares, 14 of which are planted with vines, mainly Garnacha (five clones are currently used), Cariñena, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and some experimental grape varieties.

Located in the heart of Priorat, between El Lloar and Bellmunt, the estate stretches between the Siurana river valley and the start of the Montsant mountain range. The vineyards are a mix of terraces and traditional 'costers' (vines planted on very steep slopes) - some of which date back to the early 20th century!

Planted on the famous 'llicorella' slate soils, the vineyards are being managed organically.

The nose of the 2014 Somni differs from the rest of the wines here. It's the only one where the oak and the sweet spices are obvious -- cinnamon, vanilla and smoke with some tree bark and ripe cherries...The palate shows abundant, dusty tannins that might require some more time in bottle."

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Potent, borderline fiery aromas of blackberry and cassis are heavily charred and smoky. This plump, ripe, chewy Carignan-Syrah blend is full of toast, black pepper and dark-berry flavors. A toasty, spicy finish with medium tannins runs on and on"

"Never disappoints full bodied classy balanced... rich ripe juicy fruit old prunes...this baby has years of quality ahead but is so hard to locate down to my last 6 bottles...top Priorat producer well done Alberto"  4.5/5 Stars

"Very good wine. Fruity and a hint of hot spiceness. Worked with both meat and cheese. Buy it IF you can"  4.5/5 Stars

"Big nose of dark fruit and oak. Blackberries, blue plums, blueberries, violets and smoky oak. Fullbodied, still young, wine with intense dark fruit, smoke, blackberries, dark cherries and dark chocolate."  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
