Vietti are one of Barolo's hottest properties right now!

Producing wines in a traditional style yet not afraid to innovate, their popularity has soared across the world, not least in the US, where the majority of these beautiful wines end up...

Recipients of a 100 point score in 2013, the estate goes from strength to strength and this stunning Barolo Castiglione is a fine example of just how good their wines are across the board.

A selection of fruit from top vineyard sites in Castiglione, Falletto, Monforte, Barolo and Novello (vineyards bottled as seperate crus by most winemakers), this Barolo takes everything that is good about the vintage from across the region and blends it together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The result is a deliciously elegant, vibrant Barolo full of subtlety and finesse - suprisingly open and approachable given its youth, but with the quality, structure and power to age beautifully for many years.

Because of the estate's popularity, we only have a few cases to offer....

About the wine

A beautiful glowing ruby colour, this wonderfully seductive Barolo is a classic with scent of violets, spice, earth and red hedgerow fruit. The palate is succulent and elegant with a ‘mille feuille’ of nebbiolo flavours, ranging from berry to wood spice, tobacco, violet and fresh herb. Tightly woven tannins will mellow in time and these, along with a fine backbone of acidity keep the fruit vibrant and long-lived on the palate. A quite excellent Barolo and although you it is quite open for a young Barolo and drinkable now with a decent decant, it will be best off left for a couple of years and will cellar perfectly for the next 12-15.

Grapes are selected from small vineyards across Barolo and once harvested, they are vinified and aged separately, each with slightly different processes to underline the singular characteristics of each parcel and its unique terroir. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and the wine is aged in oak – of varying age and size – by parcel for 30 months, before being blended and bottled.

About the winery

The Vietti winery has a history that can be traced by to the nineteenth century, but it didn’t start bottling its own wines until after the end of the First World War under the stewardship of Mario Vietti.

In the 1950s, Luciana Vietti’s husband, Alfredo Currado pushed the estate forward and established the property as one of the finest in Piedmont. It was a time of change and innovation as Alfredo began selecting and vinifying from single vineyards which though commonplace today, was radical at the time.

Alfredo's son Luca is now head winemaker, having joined the family firm after stints at such legendary names as California's Opus One and Bordeaux's Mouton-Rothschild.

Vietti was purchased by American Kyle Krause in 2016, much to the horror of the more conservative locals - but life still goes oin much as ever at Vietti (just with added investment) and Luca has been given free-reign to continue his superb wine-making.

The property has 35 hectares and the cellars are based in Castiglione Falleto.

About the vineyard

Grapes for the Castiglione wine are selected from vineyards located in Castiglione, Falletto, Monforte, Barolo and Novello where the vines are planted at an average rate of 4,500 vines per hectare on clay-limestone soils. The vines are between seven and 40 years of age with yields of 35 hectolitres per hectare.

93 Points - Antonio Galloni
"
The 2014 Barolo Castiglione is superb. Nuanced, layered and sculpted in the glass, the Castiglione is a wine of real precision and class. In 2014, the Castiglione is medium in body and gracious, with perhaps a bit less stuffing than in some previous editions, but tons of persistence. Hints of lavender, rose petal and red berry fruit lead into the crystalline, translucent finish. Time in the glass brings out this gorgeous Barolo's more refined side. Once again, the Castiglione is a real overachiever. The Castiglione is built on a core of Ravera, with a complement of fruit from other sites that are often vineyard-designated by other producers."

"Amazing Barolo from a traditional house"  4/5 Stars

"This entry level barolo, a blend from several crus in Castiglione Falletto, is extremely generous in from nose to palate. Red plum, mint, ripe cherry, smoke and liquorice notes with aromatic flavours are the bonus on top of excellent structure. Better to buy at least a box to the cellar before it's too late." 4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
