The greatest Italian wine you've never heard of, Sagrantino di Montefalco will knock your socks off!

Grown in beautiful Umbria, Sagrantino is the grape variety here and is only really found in and around the little town of Montefalco.

Indigenous to the region, it delivers unique wines that share Barolo's rich, tannic power and Sangiovese's herbal notes and add to them a certain wildness that is all its own.

Chiuse di Pannone is a single vineyard chosen by Antonelli for the superb grapes it produces. The estate's flagship wine, less than 4000 bottles of this beauty are produced.

Rich and powerful on the palate, complex and ethereal on the nose, this is a muscular wine, full of ripe black fruit, spice and leather.

A fascinating and beautiful wine, it's a must try!

About the wine

An intense ruby red in the glass, this is powerful stuff!

The nose is characterised by herbal black cherry and blackberry fruits with violets, mint, oregano and an earthy, foresty complexity. Concentrated and intense on the palate, the fruit from the nose carries through to be joined by nottes of truffle and mocha. The wine is big, full-bodied and muscular with abundant but very fine, silky tannins. Beautifully balanced and with superb length, it finshes on a lovely spicy note.

The Chiuse di Pannone needs a good decant if you open it now but this is a wine built to age and will improve over the next 10 years at the very least and quite probably for decades after that!

To make this Sagrantino, after a temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in wood barrels before being transferred into lightly-toasted, 500 litre barrels for six months ageing and then into 250 litre oak barrels for a further two years. The wine was then settled in glass lined cement tanks for six months before being put in bottle. At this time, the wine was aged for a final two-year period before being released on to the market.

About the winery

Antonelli San Marco is a wine and farming estate located centrally within Montefalco's DOCG winemaking area. With a background rich in history, the Antonelli family is passionately committed to caring for their territory and attentive to the quality of their products.

The estate has been in the Antonelli family since 1881. Although originally from Spoleto, the family transferred to Rome five generations ago.

Filippo Antonelli has been at the helm of the estate since 1986. He divides his time between Montefalco and Rome where he manages another family wine estate, Castello di Torre in Pietra.

For years Antonelli San Marco have constantly aimed to improve the quality of their wines. The estate style is geared towards authenticity and harmony, drinkability and elegance rather than blunt power. It leans towards gentle extraction and moderate use of wood ageing.

About the vineyard

The property extends over an entire 170-hectare portion of land located in the centre of the Montefalco DOCG region.

The whole terrain is clay and rich in limestone deposits dating from different geological periods: part of it is very deep, other parts very rich in fossils, both giving the wine intense and varied tones.

Surrounded by woodlands, the hilly area is an ideal microclimate for vineyards and olive groves. Ten hectares are assigned to the cultivation of olives and 45 hectares to vines. There are 5,600 plants per hectare set high on the slopes, according to the cordone speronato and Guyot growth systems, facing south and west. The estate is farmed organically.

The 2010 Montefalco Sagrantino Chiusa di Pannone is a bold and contemporary expression from this special appellation at the heart of Umbria. The wine opens to a dark and impenetrable appearance with thick aromatic layers that span the spectrum for a dark red of this sophistication and intensity. Black fruit segues to campfire ash, exotic spice and Spanish cedar. Those soft and spicy oak elements are put clearly on display. The finish is much softer and more velvety than you usually encounter with the highly tannic Sagrantino grape. This is a beautiful wine."

"Very good wine, soft, elegant, fruity, black berry"  5/5 Stars

"This wine is just exquisite for those that love a full bodied, aromatic wine. Black licorice, rose, black fruit, tannin, and a whole lot of structure"  4.5/5 Stars

"Top of the range Sagrantino. Flowers, earth, leather and tobacco on the nose. In the mouth it is full with excellent, youthful tannins.. Very good without being heavy"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
