From Marlborough's oldest wine estate and just landed in the UK, comes the new vintage of Auntsfield's excellent single-vineyard 2017 Sauvignon Blanc.

The 2016 was given a huge 98 points by Decanter magazine and sold out rapidly. We think the 2017 might even be better, and those critics who have had the chance to rate it are already wheeling out the superlatives.

Only £12.90 per bottle, it must be one of the region's greatest values.

The "Single Vineyard" wines of Auntsfield are a class apart. Each wine is characterized by maturity, texture and minerality, due to the ancient Greywacke rock and Loess clay soils found on the estate.

This is a distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc made from fruit grown in old clay soils. The resulting wine is style is textural and complex; balancing ripe fruits and lifted aromatics with richness, mouth feel and remarkable length.

Auntsfield is a family-run estate with a passion for making exceptional wines that reflect the land they were grown on. Their passion shines clearly through this wonderful Sauvignon Blanc.

About the wine

Pale straw green in the glass, this 2017 shows lifted and pure aromas of passionfruit, ripe citrus and lime leaf. Notes of fresh and dried herbs, gooseberry and redcurrant add pungency and intensity to the aromatics. Powerful, tight and elegant, this wine displays intense ripe fruit flavours of passionfruit juice and white peach, with citrus notes of lime and mandarin pith. The palate has intense concentration and generous weight, balanced by an underlying minerality and tight structure to shape a wine with lively tension and textural balance. Top-notch Sauvignon Blanc!

Cool fermentation with cultured yeast in stainless steel tanks was utilised to retain the fresh varietal aromatics. This was balanced by a portion of the fruit subjected to traditional winemaking practices; handpicked, whole bunch pressed and fermented in seasoned oak barrels, adding texture and length to the wine. The result is a hand-crafted wine combining the bright fresh fruit characters with an underlying minerality and fine structure.

About the winery

When Graeme and Linda Cowley first bought the property, there were no grapes anywhere around them. It wasn’t until they began researching the history of the land, that they realised they had just purchased Marlborough’s very first vineyard. Dating back to the 1860s, when it had been planted with muscat by visionary David Herd, the vineyard had reverted to being a sheep station.

Auntsfield is a family business in every sense of the word. And, at the very heart of this, are Graeme and Linda’s sons – Ben and Luc Cowley. Both men are utterly passionate about the part they play in creating the exceptional wines made here at Auntsfield. Just to hear them talk about their part in the creation is a privilege: they will tell you about the land, the grapes and the craft behind their wines. In fact just try to get them to stop talking.

About the vineyard

The Southern Valleys is a sub region within Marlborough where the climate is cooler and drier. With its mix of high mineral Greywacke rock and old low fertility Loess clay soils, the Southern Valleys is regarded for its riper styles of wine with more structure, texture and minerality. The Auntsfield vineyard covers 65 hectares and is planted in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

From this ancient and harsh landscape come wines that are unique, complex and elegant with an authenticity of place. This soil is special but by working hand-in-hand we strive to produce wines that are as impressive and as arresting as the land they grow on.

About the winemaker

Ben knows the seasons and the land better than any, this is his soil, these are his vines, his grapes. He lives here on the vineyard and is totally and utterly in touch with the land and the weather. He knows when to harvest and when to take risks.

Ben believes in growing grapes of the highest quality that truly reflect the individuality of Auntsfield Estate - “Wine with provenance is created from quality fruit grown in a distinctive terroir...A culture of searching for differences within the vineyard has allowed us to focus on individual parcels of fruit which display unique expressions of the physical characteristics of Auntsfield Estate. It’s my job to nurture these differences and help develop their expression through to the final wine”.

94 Points - Sam Kim

"
From their estate vineyard in the Southern Valleys, the wine offers fabulous fruit intensity as well as silky mouthfeel. The beautifully lifted bouquet shows lemon peel, feijoa, passionfruit and lime zest aromas, followed by a concentrated palate that is focused and linear. The wine delivers wonderful vibrancy and bright acidity, leading to a superbly long, fine finish. A stylish rendition filled with attractive flavours."

"
Bright pale straw colour with slight green hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is soft and gently voluminous with ethereal, fragrant aromas of tropical fruits and white florals, underlined by passionfruit and fresh herbs. The nose shows a concentrated core with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has up-front and rich fruit flavours of tropical fruits, passionfruit, gooseberries and fresh herbs. The fruit has good body and presence, forming a fine-textured and concentrated heart, with good linearity. Fresh, brisk acidity enlivens the fruitiness and aromatics, and the wine flows with good energy to a long, lingering, dry, fine-textured finish, This is a finely concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with ethereal aromas and deep flavours of tropical fruits, passionfruit and gooseberries on a fine, fresh palate."

"Fresher and crisper than the 2016, slight satsuma note in it. Still gorgeous wine.4.5/ 5 Stars

"Very pale in colour...herbal, bell pepper and blackcurrant nuances which quickly vanished. In about 15 minutes the passionfruit and citrus begin to blossom, on the palate its quite full and mineral, hit right at the sweet spot of equilibrium. Crispy finish, cheers!"  4.5/5 Stars

"The clearest wine I have ever seen. Almost like pale water in the glass. Grapefruit and lemon grass. So clean and crisp and refreshing. Another great white wine from New Zealand"  4.5 / 5 stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
