Rueda is internationally acclaimed for its white wines and this lovely Sauvignon Blanc 2016 from Castelo de Medina clearly demonstrates why!

It marries the minerality and freshness of the Loire Valley with the aromatic intensity and tropical fruit of New Zealand and throws in a ripeness and structure that is all down to its Iberian roots.

This is such a terrific, super-fresh, approachable wine that it’s pretty much irresistible - and doubly so at the price of just £11.49 a bottle!

A winner of many gold medals, in 2016 it was even lauded as the ‘Best Sauvignon Blanc’ in the world...we'll let you make your own minds up about that, but we suggest you buy a few bottles to help you with your decision - you certainly won't regret it!

About the wine

A pale straw yellow with golden hues in the glass, this is a wine that tastes as good as it looks! Fresh, zesty, tropical fruits, lemon and fresh cut grass follow from nose to palate and finish with a lengthy zippy freshness. Pure, clean and deeply refreshing, this is a lovely wine to drink on its own or with food.

Rueda is located in the north-west of Spain, in an area defined by cities with evocative names: Valladolid, Salamanca, Avila, Segovia.

History has left its mark on this land and nature has favored it by endowing it with a beautiful terroir - clay-limestone soil covered with sand and pebbles. The climate is harsh here but vines are hardened to tough conditions and thrive even when the elements seem set against them.

It is in this context that Bodega Castelo de Medina was created and has been producing delicious, fresh white wines wines that over the last 20 years have placed them at the very peak of Rueda producers.

About the winery

Bodegas Castelo de Medina was founded by a trio of wine lovers in 1996. The vineyard holding currently stands at 180 hectares.

In 1996 the winery was built; featuring traditional Castilian architecture with a façade of brick, stone, wrought iron and wood. The building houses the winery’s offices and production facilities with stainless steel tanks. The barrel room is in a separate annex, carved in to a hill and hidden from public view. A second winery building was built in 2009 and it is here that the wine is bottled.

Considered one of Rueda's best producers, the estate offers a wide range of award winning white, red and rosé wines.

About the vineyard

The property’s 180 hectares of vines are all located in the DO of Rueda, where it grows four white grape varieties (Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Viura and Chardonnay) and three red grape varieties (Tempranillo, Syrah and Grenache).

The soils are clay-limestone and covered with sandy and stony layers ideal for reflecting solar light and heat and thus promoting  the ripening of grapes. The vineyard is maintained in a traditional way, with respect for the environment and with the constant aim of controlling the yields in order to ensure the vines produce only the best fruit.

"What a bargain! Fantastic for the price" 4.5/5 Stars

"Rueda in Spain. Known for its Verdejo wines. But this Sauvignon Blanc really is a treat." 4.0/5 Stars

"Yes yes! My first Sauvignon Blanc from Rueda. Wow, special in every way. A beautiful variety of minerals and tropical fruit with a pleasant hint of acidity. In no way comparable with its equivalents from New Zealand. Less outspoken, but thanks to time spent "sur lie" the wine has its own character. A good one for blind tastings!" 4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
