On offer today is this extremely impressive Saint Joseph from wine legend Michel Chapoutier.

He may be making brilliant wines across the world now, but Michel's heart lies in the Rhône and especially the Northern Rhône - and here he makes his greatest wines.

This lovely red displays all of Michel's considerable skills and in our opinion is not far off the quality of his Hermitage wines - the ones that regularly rack up the magical 100 point scores from Robert Parker...

From the fantastic 2015 vintage, the St Joseph Granilites is full of beautifully ripe, creamy black fruit, allied to a mineral and graphite character that gives the wine a delicious complexity.

“If you come across this for less than £30, buy it!" said one impressed Vivino reviewer - we couldn't agree more!

"One of the most fascinating and compelling winemakers in the entire world, dedicated to the highest quality." Robert Parker

About the wine

A lovely clear garnet red in the glass, this St Joseph has a lovely, entrancing nose of intense wild dark berry notes (blackcurrant, blackberries) and graphite, underscored by a peppery spice. On drinking, this is a taught, mineral red with fine, tight tannins and a broad palate of rich, creamy blackberry and blackcurrant fruits. Juicy and fresh, the wine is balanced by its smooth texture and made yet more enjoyable by the long, lingering finish.

As with many of the 2015s, this St Joseph is full of ripe, sweet fruit and hard to resist drinking immediately - especially if decanted first. However, such is the quality here that the wine has a great future ahead of it. You won't regret leaving a bottle for another 5 years or more!

Michel Chapoutier is a winemaking genius with more 100 point wines than any other winemaker.

Everywhere he goes he brings his Midas touch, making wines of exceptional quality. But his spiritual home is in the Rhône and the wines he produces here are counted among the most pure, silky, exotic, wines in the world...

The syrah fruit was harvested by hand in early October and was then fermented in concrete vats, using indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasted four weeks and was followed by malolactic fermentation in oak casks. The wine was aged in oak for the first 12 months and then completed in concrete tanks for a final six months.

About the winery

As you may have gathered, Michel Chapoutier is both a remarkable man and a superb winemaker. In 1990, at the tender age of 26, he bought the family business from his grandfather and assumed full control of the winemaking and the maturation. Prior to this he had explored many other wine regions, expanding both his skills and his horizons.

On his return to the Rhone in 1987 he was appalled by the out-dated winemaking practices still rigorously adhered to by his father and brother. Their wines were thin, under-ripe and often oxidised, but they refused to change.

In 1989 Michel had enough: he went to his grandfather and told him that he was leaving, and that he couldn’t work with his family any more. His grandfather said he couldn’t leave, and offered to hand the reins directly to Michel. But Michel didn’t want to battle his family members every step of the way, so issued an ultimatum: he wanted to buy the company himself, or he would leave.

Michel got his way, and the company. Since then, the Chapoutier firm, which was in crisis back then, has been transformed beyond recognition. It is now a huge success, making some of the world's most acclaimed wines.

About the vineyard

Chapoutier says that, “the complexity in a wine comes from the level of microbiological activity around the vine roots" and in line with this, he approaches every one of his vineyards with the same rigorous biodynamic principles, to ensure that good grapes become memorable wine.

Soils on the Chapoutier estates never see pesticides or herbicides as floral growth amongst the vines is essential. The natural cycles of the earth, sun and moon are also considered.

The parcels of vines for this wine are located in the districts of Chamas, Tournon and Mauves, where there is granite terrain with good natural drainage.

94 points - Joe Czerwinski
"
The powerhouse 2015 Saint Joseph les Granilites sacrifices none of its intricate crushed stone elements to the warmth of the vintage, it just adds layers of creamy, ripe blackberries over the top. This full-bodied, rich and concentrated wine should provide close to two decades of drinking pleasure."

Rounded blackberry and iodine aroma. Natural inner strength, floral charm and crispness. Intricate, authentic."

92 points - Jeb Dunnuck
"Clean, classic Syrah notes of black fruits (blackberries, currants) and peppery herbs, medium to full-bodied richness, a silky texture, no hard edges, and a great finish."

92 points - Josh Raynolds
"Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed red/blue fruit, spicecake and floral pastille aromas pick up a smoky mineral accent with air. Fresh blueberry, blackberry and allspice flavors are energized and sharpened by a spine of juicy acidity. Distinctly lively in style, finishing alluringly sweet and quite long; fine-grained tannins make a late appearance."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
