A Grand Cru Classé and one of Bordeaux's great white wines, Château Carbonnieux traces its history as far back as the 12th century, making it one of the region's oldest estates.

With over 800 years of wine-making behind them, it's no surprise that what they make is pretty special.

A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon from some of the best vineyard sites in the superior Pessac-Léognan appellation of the Graves region, Château Carbonnieux Blanc is a beautifully complex, layered wine that improves massively with time in the bottle.

Bordeaux's dry white wines had a fantastic year in 2011 and this wine has just hit its perfect drinking window.

Just £29.95 per bottle for one of Bordeaux's best with 5 years in bottle is fantastic value, the equivalent quality in Burgundy would run to at least double that and quite probably more.

With only 10 cases to offer, there isn't much to go around, so make sure you don't miss this great white!

About the wine

Due to the cool conditions and the top quality, this Carbonnieux Blanc 2011 is completely fresh. Citrus, pineapple, mint and even cassis jump out of the glass. A smoky, spicy layer envelops the ripe fruit. An intensely fresh and rich taste fills your mouth, all supported by a distinct minerality. A long aftertaste of candied lemon peel and an almost saline note makes every sip an experience.

Château Carbonnieux Blanc is a legendary wine. It is said that in the 18th century it was introduced to the Sultan of Constantinople’s palace because of its clarity and was called “mineral water from Carbonnieux”, thus defying the Islamic law.

The clay–limestone of Garonne gravel found in the Pessac-Léognan appellation certainly produces the best dry white wines in the Bordeaux region. When young, Carbonnieux white wines are delightfully refreshing and pure with a fruity, floral intensity. When mature they develop hints of dried and candied fruits.

About the winery

Founded in the thirteenth century by the Benedictine Abbey of the Holy Cross, Château Carbonnieux is among the oldest of the Bordeaux Chateaux

Passionate about their vineyards, the monks - made it into one of the most fruitful vineyards in Bordeaux.  In the aftermath of the French Revolution, the estate was acquired by the Bouchereau family, which kept it until 1878. Then followed a period of relative instability during which it changed hands several times.

In 1956, Marc Perrin acquired the winery which was to be awarded Cru Classé status in 1959, for both red and white. Today, Eric, Philibert and Christine, his grandchildren have taken over, following the incredible work of their father Antony..

About the vineyard

The vineyard of Carbonnieux is planted on a beautiful hill of naturally draining gravel.

Within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, this prestigious terroir is remarkable for its morphology and the diversity of its soils. Spread over 119 plots, the vineyard has 50 hectares devoted to red grape varieties and 42 to white grape varieties.

Carbonnieux are strongly committed to "clean" agriculture, promoting non-polluting practices.

94 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Very herbaceous in character, this is a wine that is packed with powerful acidity yet remains elegant in style. It has minerality and tight acidity, and should benefit from aging."

91 Points - Wine Spectator
Very bright and engaging, with a chamomile note leading the way, followed by quinine, lemon zest and white peach flavors that bounce through the lively finish."

91 Points - James Suckling
A white with a lively, bright character of dried pineapple, lemon and chalk. Full body, intense and powerful. Solid core of fruit. Chewy finish. Just a baby here. So wonderful now but will deliver so much more in the future." (written in 2014)

90+ Points - Ian D'Agata
"Bright straw. Fresh aromas of lime, white peach, minty herbs and white flowers. Shows almost tart flavors of white stone fruits and green apple, with lemon and mineral notes lingering nicely on the saliva-inducing finish. Very strong acidity conveys an almost tart impression, but this multilayered wine has enough stuffing to come around with a little bottle age. Very well done: this is an outstanding, affordable dry white Bordeaux"

"What a hidden treasure! The nose was overly oaky when I just opened the bottle. Thanks to the reviews, I decanted for half an hour. The effect was great. The aromas opened up, exploding its nutty tones and ripe peach flavours in its bouquet. The flavours are intense and pleasant in the mouth. Another great white wine from pessac leognan"  4.5/5 Stars

"Check my reviews. Don't drink whites. Don't like whites. But this white is AMAZING. Wonderful mineral flavor, great complexity. Really great wine.4.5/5 Stars

"Pale gold with green. Very nice nose. With the aroma of blackberry and blackberry leaves we can see the dominance of Sauvignon blanc (70%). On palate, the wine is still young but very fine and delicate. I enjoyed very much."  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
