LAST FEW BOTTLES!

Could this be the perfect combo of wine and winemaker?

Côte-Rôtie is the king of rich, fragrant Northern Rhône reds, 2015 is a superlative vintage and Michel Chapoutier is a winemaking genius with more 100 point wines than any other winemaker.

Everywhere he goes he brings his Midas touch, making wines of exceptional quality, but his spiritual home is in the Northern Rhône and the Côte-Rôtie he produces here are counted among the most sensuous, silky, exotic, wines in the world...

Robert Parker has called him "One of the most fascinating and compelling winemakers in the entire world, dedicated to the highest quality."

2015 was a superb vintage and it shows in this classic Côte-Rôtie with its blackberry and floral notes and silky intense fruit.

And for a region where the wines can easily stretch into three figures, £45.95 is great value for a taste of genius!

About the wine

A deep purplish red in the glass, the 2015 Bécasses has a classic Côte-Rôtie nose - bright blackberry fruit mingling with roasted meats, herbal and floral notes, black olive tapenade and a distinct spiciness. On the palate, the wine is deep and concentrated with layers of great ripe fruit (a hallmark of this vintage), silky tannins and a balanced elegance that hides the power of the fruit. This is young Côte-Rôtie and although it is definitely approachable now with a good decant, it will age beautifully. A classic wine that demonstrates clearly why the Northern Rhône  is Syrah's spiritual home!

The grapes are entirely hand-harvested at maturity and after destemming, the grapes ferment in concrete tanks. A daily treading ensures a good extraction of the colour and tannins. The temperature does not exceed 33°C. Fermenting lasts between 3 and 4 weeks depending on the vintage.

Ageing lasts 14-16 months. 80% of the wine is aged in oak barrels with a majority of new wood. The remaining 20% are aged in stainless steel vats which allows Chapoutier to preserve the purity of the fruit and the floral notes, which are a distinctive feature of great Côte-Rôtie wines.

About the winery

As you may have gathered, Michel Chapoutier is both a remarkable man and a superb winemaker.

In 1990, at the tender age of 26, he bought the family business from his grandfather and assumed full control of the winemaking and the maturation. Prior to this he had explored many other wine regions, expanding both his skills and his horizons. On his return to the Rhône in 1987, he was appalled by the out-dated winemaking practices still rigorously adhered to by his father and brother. Their wines were thin, under-ripe and often oxidised, but they refused to change.

In 1989 Michel had enough: he went to his grandfather and told him that he was leaving, and that he couldn’t work with his family any more. His grandfather said he couldn’t leave, and offered to hand the reins directly to Michel. But Michel didn’t want to battle his family members every step of the way, so issued an ultimatum: he wanted to buy the company himself, or he would leave.

Michel got his way, and the company. Since then, the Chapoutier firm, which was in crisis, has been transformed beyond recognition. It is now a huge success, with some of the world's most acclaimed wines.

About the vineyard

The tiny, rugged Cote Rotie appellation makes spectacular wines. The soil in which these vines are grown is composed of chlorite and ferruginous mica-schist blending in loess depressions. The soil is also made up of schist on the South and Southeast slopes, allowing the Syrah to express itself with tremendous power and great elegance with its lovely floral notes.

Les Bécasses is a blend from across Côte-Rôtie but owes most to the slopes of the Côte Brune; it also includes Syrah sourced from further south in the appellation.

About the winemaker

Michel Chapoutier is the sort of man about which books could be written!  Since taking control of the family firm, he has revolutionised the production of wine from his sites, not only in the Rhône, but now his plantings stretch from the Douro, to Italy and Alsace.

He is a consummate professional when it comes to his trade, and is a firm believer in letting the terroir speak: “I do not try to create the perfect wine, but to take snapshots of the terroir”.  It just so happens that in doing so, he does create near perfection! He is beyond a doubt one of France's greatest winemakers

"...the world’s leading, irreverent genius in winemaking and winemaking philosophy" Robert Parker

"
It's hard to believe this is Chapoutier's "entry-level" Côte Rôtie. The 2015 Cote Rotie les Bécasses is a rich, full-bodied, creamy-textured effort, loaded with ripe fruit that takes the form of mocha, milk chocolate and roasted meat, leading into a long, savory and velvety finish."

"
Inky ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruit, Asian spice and potpourri qualities, and an exotic incense nuance emerges slowly. Sappy, penetrating and focused on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry, boysenberry and allspice flavors and a deeper suggestion of licorice. Concentrated but energetic as well, with delivering strong closing thrust, even tannins and an echo of sweet blue fruit."

"
The entry-level Côte Rôtie mostly from purchased grapes is the 2015 Côte Rôtie Les Bécasses. Possessing terrific quality, it offers deep black and blue fruits, spice, underbrush and violet aromatics as well as a medium to full-bodied, pure, seamless and elegant style on the palate. It's a terrific entry-level wine that readers shouldn't miss."

"Beautiful 100% syrah from Cotie-rotie. lovely floral and earth plus smoked meat on the nose. Palate is big broad and smooth with loads of fruit and complexity. Still pretty tight and tannic and will continue to improve. Potential 4.5!"  4/5 Stars

"Cracking concentration. Tannins firm but I reckon this will get better and better"  4/5 Stars

"Buy!!"  4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
