LAST FEW BOTTLES!

When Côte-Rôtie is at its best, it is one of the world's great Syrah wines - powerful, rich and perfumed.

But so little is made and it is so sought after that prices are stratospheric - so when you find a brilliant Côte-Rôtie with a price that doesn't run into three figures, it's time to celebrate and get buying!

Domaine Billon is the best Côte-Rôtie producer you've never heard of. These wines should be heralded from the rooftops but for some reason, the wine world has passed them by. More fool them!

Christophe Billon learnt his trade at the legendary Guigal estate and now brings his full knowledge and skill to bear on his own vines. His Les Elotins is sourced from his own vineyards within the famed Côte Brune.

This is Côte-Rôtie as it should be, with stunningly complex fruit and astounding depth and elegant balance and in the fantastic 2015 vintage, Christophe has hit the mark in every respect.

At just £39.95 per bottle, this must be far and away Côte-Rôtie's greatest value.

Do not miss out on this wine, because word will eventually get out - and when it does, the world will beat a path to Christophe's door...

About the wine

This is a bit of a beauty! It delivers powerful aromas with layer upon layer of perfumed, ripe black and red fruit - raspberry, morello cherry and blackberry - given complexity by floral tones, smoke, black tea and licquorice. On drinking, it is silkily elegant, gliding across the palate. But beneath the elegance lurks power and concentration, richness and more ripe fruit that sings of this superb vintage. Superb freshness and fine tannins balance the wine and give it a fantastic structure that ends in a savoury, mineral finish that seems to last for minutes. This is genuinely brilliant Côte-Rôtie, complex, structured and utterly lovely.

This exciting wine is very much at the start of its life, with the winemaker suggesting that it be left for three years from bottling before being drunk. Drinking it today is both a pleasure and a view to the delights that are to come - but we'd recommend a decent couple of hours in a decanter first!

From syrah grapes grown on schistous soils, the bunches are all destemmed before being vinified in stainless steel, with punching down of the cap taking place twice daily to maximise extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. The wine is aged for 26 months in first and second fill French oak barrels.

About the winery

Located in the ‘lieu-dit’ of Rozier, three kilometres from Ampuis, Domaine Billon have six hectares of vines. While working at Guigal, Christophe and his wife Maryline began this side project in 1991. He left Guigal in 2008 to dedicate his full time to their estate vineyards.

Modest in size and comparatively new to the Côte-Rôtie block, the wines have steadily gained a loyal following from those-in-the-know. Wine critic, Jeb Dunnuck, commented in 2016 that the line-up of wines he tasted from Billon were “sensational”.

About the vineyard

Les Elotins is made from syrah grapes harvested from various parcels in the Billon holdings in Côte Brune, the where the soils are predominantly schist. The vines are, on average, forty years old with some of the oldest having been planted in 1942.

93-95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
"… offers lots of raspberry and black raspberry notes, as well as new saddle leather, cassis, toasted spice and dried flowers. Full-bodied, pure, layered and downright silky, it’s a brilliant wine that will have two decades of longevity."

"The bouquet gives a perfumed, violets air above its black berry fruit, is a full, harmonious start. The palate bears savoury content, with a juicy welling up on the second half, with enjoyable blackberry fruit at its centre. The finish is also well juiced, with fine tannin present. This is an accurate vintage 2015, sensuous Rôtie, with good detail and an unforced style."

"A beautiful Côte-Rôtie a little different from the norm with great potential with 4-5 years of age" 4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
