Cornas has seen a renaissance over the past couple of decades. Long-overlooked for the likes of Hermitage or Cote-Rotie, its comeback over the last 2 decades has been nothing short of remarkable.

A handful of dedicated, passionate growers have taken this region and its superb terroir and completely regenerated it, replacing the rustic, tannic wines it once produced with Syrah of great beauty and concentration - at its best able to compete with the top wines of Hermitage.

Such is the turn-around that some bottlings of Cornas now sell for hundreds of pounds and such is the demand and desire for the wine that many others are heading the same way.

Domaine Courbis are one of Cornas' top growers and this wine one of their best, grown in the single-vineyard of Les Eygats, situated high on terraces above Cornas itself.

A brilliant expression of Syrah, it is a fine demonstration of all that is great about Cornas - and given its scarcity (just 400 cases made) and quality, it is rather stunning value at £38.75 per bottle.

About the wine

This is just a stunning wine - a clear demonstration of why the Northern Rhône is the heartland of Shiraz. Deep, dark fruit - think blueberries and plums - mixed with a touch of spicy pepper, black olives and a savoury, almost meaty note. The wine fills the palate with a rich, intense concentration of fruit and fine-grained tannin, all leading to a long, succulent finish. This is classic Cornas and delicious now, if young. Has a good decade of wonderful drinking ahead of it.

The grapes were hand harvested, destemmed and lightly pressed. Vinification took place in sealed stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of between 30 and 32°C. The maceration process lasted for three weeks until the desired levels of colour and flavour were extracted. The wine was then aged in oak barrels, 50% of which were made of new oak.

About the winery

Domaine Courbis dates from the 16th century and has been handed down from father to son since the start of the 20th century. Now under the dynamic partnership of two brothers: Laurent, who is responsible for winemaking, and Dominique who looks after the vineyard.

The vineyard currently extends to 35 hectares (including eight hectares in Cornas, five hectares in Saint Joseph Blanc and 19 hectares in Saint Joseph Rouge) in the communes of Châteaubourg and Cornas. The vines are planted on steep hillsides facing South and West. The wine cellar is modern and equipped with temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and oak casks.

The wines of Domaine Courbis are of extremely high quality and are consistently met with worldwide acclaim.

About the vineyard

Located high on the right bank of the Rhône, the terraces of Cornas are a great terroir.

Les Eygats is one of the best single vineyards in Cornas. Sitting at 300 metres, high above the village of Cornas itself and south-east facing, this late-ripening micro-climate produces superb quality grapes from vines that are about 20 years old

My favorite of the 2013s was the 2013 Cornas les Eygats. All from a single, higher elevation parcel that’s located above Chaillot, it’s aged 16 months in 50% new and 50% one-year-old barrels before bottling. The most broad, expansive and mouth-filling of the lineup, it offers that classic black/blue mix of fruit (plum, blueberries, blackberries) that I always find in young wines from this appellation, to go with background minerality, pepper and smoked meat. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, fleshy and with the estate’s hallmark purity, drink this sensational Cornas anytime over the coming 10-15 years."

A bright, fresh, almost brisk version, with a chalky spine and mouthwatering iron notes leading the way, while the core of red currant, damson plum and bitter cherry fruit quickly follows. Delivers tension and cut through the finish, with the chalky edge really stretching out. This could have some staying power in the cellar."

Youthful violet. High-pitched aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, potpourri and smoky minerals are accented by suggestions of cracked pepper and anise. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering concentrated blueberry and violet pastille flavors that become more lively with air. Fine-grained tannins build steadily on the finish, which lingers with wonderful tenacity and resonating minerality."

17.5/20 Points - Richard Hemming
"Gorgeously succulent black fruit, very light spice – this is all about fruit concentration, which it delivers in spades. Layered and thick and concentrated."

4/5 Stars
"The bouquet is inky, weighty, has a pulp of black berries aroma, some buffed black leather, cocoa. This attacks on fluid black fruit, swiftly takes on crisp, chalky tannins and a menthol thrust. There is plenty here...the finishing kick and its demands are very Cornasien. From 2018"

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
