When we first tasted the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge from the small estate of Domaine de Saint Siffrein, we were utterly confounded...

How could such a great Châteauneuf from such a great vintage be such great value?

And how could it be barely known outside of France?

Never ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, we immediately purchased as much as we could in order to offer it to Vivino customers.

This is beautiful, classic Châteauneuf. Full of silky dark fruit, spice and classic herbal notes, it is everything you could want from this great appellation.

100% certified organic (one of the first in Châteauneuf to go organic) Domaine de Saint Siffrein has started to attract the critics' attention  - as the 94 point score for this vintage testifies.

We suggest trying this excellent Châteauneuf before the world catches on  - wines of this quality and price level are few and far between!

About the wine

This is classic, traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape! A bright ruby-red on pouring, the glass fills with lovely aromas of black fruit, truffle and herbal garrigue notes backed by a sweet spice and a touch of smoke. On the palate juicy, fresh raspberries are joined by more of the herbal, peppery notes. Round, soft and full-bodied, this is an utterly charming wine that clearly demonstrates just how good a vintage this was. With terrific power, purity and texture, it is approachable now with a decant but it has a glorious future ahead!

Wine-making here is traditional and designed to reflect the vintage and the terroir in the best way possible. The grapes are partially destemmed, slighty crushed and fermented in concrete with pumping-over and punching of the cap to obtain the desired extraction of tannins. Natural yeasts only are used for fermenttion.

Maturing is done over 12 months with 50% of the wine in large oak casks (45 hl) and 50% in concrete vats. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered at the Domaine.

About the winery

Domaine Saint Siffrein was founded in 1880 by the great great-grandfather of the current owner Cyril Chastan.

Since its founding, the estate has been passed down from generation to generation. For much of this time the wines were sold to negociants for bottling, however, from 1950 onwards, the winery began bottling and selling their own wine.

Cyril now grows 5 ha (12.5 acres) of vines in the Côtes du Rhône Villages region and 15 ha (38 acres) in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with all the experience gained from his ancestors Siffrein, Abel, Yves and then his father Claude.

They have cultivated the vineyard using organic farming methods for more than 35 years - one of the first vineyards in Chateauneuf du Pape to do so -and since 2012 the wines of Domaine de Saint Siffrein have been officially certified as organic.

About the vineyard

The vineyards are well placed in the northwestern part of Chateauneuf du Pape, in the Cabrieres, Mont-Redon, Bois Lauzon and Palestor lieux-dits The terroir of the vineyards is unique: large, rounded stones absorb and then radiate the sun’s heat, which helps to produce concentrated, mature grapes.

The Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Roussanne vines have been planted in perfect harmony with these soils. They average 60 years of age, and are low-yielding in their production.

It’s the blending of these different grape varieties that allows the Domaine’s wines to achieve such a wonderful complexity.

94 Points - Joe Czerwinski

One of my favorite straight Châteauneufs was this effort from Saint Siffrein. The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts remarkable ripeness and power without any heat, incredibly pure raspberries and stone fruit, rich, velvety tannins that never seem obtrusive and a long, intense finish. It's a classic blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks and foudres."

91-93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape looks to be terrific, with lots of black fruits, truffle, smoked herbs and meatiness, as well solid intensity and depth on the palate, and tons of pepper on the finish."

91-93 Points - Josh Raynolds
Bright ruby-red. Aromas and flavors of ripe red and blue fruits take on floral and peppery spice notes as the wine opens up. Silky and expansive on the palate, showing very good depth as well as energy and back-end lift. Leaves notes of candied flowers and allspice behind on the gently gripping, subtly tannic, very persistent finish."

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
