"Easily one of my favourite estates" Robert Parker

Isabel Ferrando may have only started making Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2002 but she has rapidly found a place in the A-list of Châteauneuf producers!

This boutique operation has produced vintage after vintage of great wines and has a cult following, especially for Isabel's top wine, the Châteauneuf Charles Giraud.

With just 400 cases produced each year, Charles Giraud has to date been the recipient of two perfect, 100 point scores from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and as a consequence, is snapped up as soon as it hits the market.

Made from very old Grenache and Mourvedre vines (most about 60-100+years old), planted on some of Châteauneuf's top terroir, this is easily one of the best wines being produced in Châteauneuf today.

We have been incredibly lucky to get our hands on some of the 2014 vintage. Unfortunately we only have a tiny amount to offer and we expect it to sell out quickly, so if you are interested, please make sure you place your order early.

"Domaine Saint Préfert has leapt into the handful of top estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape…sensational levels of fruit, beautiful purity and overflowing Provençal charm.” – Jeb Dunnuck

made from blending 60% old vine Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, although the blend can vary quite a bit, depending on the vintage. The terroir is pure rocks and stones found in the Les Serres and Le Cristia lieux-dits. The vines for this cuvee range in age to as young as 40 years to more than 100 years of age. Although the average vine age for this cuvee is between 60 to 100 years. The grapes are not destemmed. Each grape variety is aged separately before blending. The wine is aged for about 18 months in demi-muids. On average, only 400 cases are produced of this wine per year making this very hard to find after release.

About the wine

Described by various critics as ‘sensational’ and ‘terrific’, this is a great Châteauneuf that has the concentration, power and body that you would expect from one of the region's best wines, but without ever losing brightness or vivacity.

With deep, ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit and notes of leather, spice, and garrigue, this is layered and complex as it slowly unfolds in the glass. Full-bodied and dense on the palate, it is clearly powerful but hides it behind an elegant balance of fruit and acidity. A core of sweet red fruit merges with darker fruit and spicy savoury tannins, courtesy of the Mourvedre in the blend. The finish is simply stunning, revealing itself over minutes in an array of flavours that is almost Burgundian in nature.

This has a long and beautiful life ahead of it, but such is its elegant balance that it is hard to resist now for its youthful energy and exuberance!

After being hand-harvested, the grapes are not destemmed. Each grape variety is aged separately before a final blending. The wine is aged for about 18 months in demi-muids. On average, only 400 cases are produced of this wine per year making this very hard to find after release.

About the winery

One-time banker, Isabel Ferrando bought Domaine Saint Préfert in 2002, having cut her winemaking teeth in Gigondas at Domaine Raspail-Ay. An established domaine with a good reputation, there is no question that since Isabel’s arrival the wines of Saint Préfert have rocketed from good to exemplary. Critics have described the wines as “stunningly good” and “sensational” and the domaine as having “leapt into the handful of top estate in Châteauneuf du Pape”.

In Isabel’s own words, the wines are “elegant and feminine”. There’s no complicated fuss or faff in the winery. She chooses whole-cluster fermentation, preferring the fresher wines it delivers. Isabel works with well-known winemaking consultant Philippe Cambie.

About the vineyard

The Charles Giraud is produced from vines ranging in age from 60 years old to some truly ancient vines that are 100 years plus. The vines are grown on some of the best terroir in the region - the Les Serres lieux-dit with sandy soils and the Le Cristia lieux-dit, where the soil consists of little but rocks and the rounded pebbles known locally as 'galets'.

The domaine vineyards are managed following organic and biodynamic practices.

In each of the vineyard parcels, the vine varieties are co-planted as Isabel’s mentor, the legendary Henri Bonneau, once told her that this technique is “the beginning of the complexity”!

95 Points - International Wine Report
"... a sensational effort in this vintage...The wine opens to gorgeous aromas of raspberries and plums woven together with exotic spices, violets and pepper with subtle hints of rosemary. On the palate this is simply divine as it is beautifully balanced with remarkable finesse. There is a wonderful core of sweet red fruits with raspberry reduction flavors leading the way into the refined finish. While this is already extremely impressive at this early stage, there is little doubt this will continue to become even more compelling as it evolves gracefully over the next decade and beyond."

94 Points - Wine Spectator

"Dense for the vintage, with a core of fig and blackberry fruit that has melded with ample pepper, tobacco and lavender notes. This has plenty in reserve, though the long, juicy finish lets everything play out, leaving a light sanguine echo at the very end. Should age well."

92-94+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck

"Tasted from barrel, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud incorporates a splash of Syrah in 2014 and is a blend of 55% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah. Aged 18 months in mostly two- to three-year-old barrels, it has lots of white pepper, cedary spice, plum and darker berry fruit on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, lively and fresh, yet with a rockin’ mid-palate and finish, it’s a terrific 2014 that will come together nicely with a year or two in bottle." (tasted 2015)

92-94 Points - Josh Raynolds

"Full ruby. Deeply perfumed, smoke-tinged aromas of cherry compote, boysenberry, anise and garrigue, complicated by a potpourri flourish. Juicy, expansive and appealingly sweet, offering intense red and blue fruit liqueur flavors and a touch of floral pastilles. Youthful tannins build slowly on an impressively long, focused finish that leaves a sexy lavender note behind."

"There is more than ample, rich, fresh, sweet, fruit with vibrant acidity, silky, lush, polished textures and a fruit filled, peppery finish, with length that sticks with you. The wine was made from a blend 55% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah. This is one of the best wines of the vintage. You can drink it young for its energy, or age it a few years for more secondary complexity."

17/20 Points - Jancis Robinson

"Tasted blind. Bright purplish crimson. Lively nose and a certain saltiness on the palate. Good, refreshing fruit with some depth and energy. Excellent balance even if it doesn’t have all that much tannin. 40% Mourvèdre in this cuvée."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
