"This could very well be the finest Estrecho to date" Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Intense, concentrated and with fascinating herbal and floral notes combining with a silken, rich texture, this is quite incredible value at just £25.75 per bottle - a world class wine at a very reasonable price...

Enrique Mendoza's flagship wine, the single vineyard El Estrecho is rightly recognised as one of the world's greatest examples of 100% Monastrell and we are very pleased to offer a small amount, freshly arrived from Spain.

The Enrique Mendoza estate is highly-regarded and one of Spain’s 28 Grandes Vino de Pagos - an association dedicated to upholding and promoting very high quality single estate wine.

This group promotes the ‘pago’ concept; a wine produced in a specific terroir that reflects the distinct personality of the soils and climate. There are only 28 wineries who are accredited in this way in Spain.

Think of it as an unofficial Spanish 'Grand Cru'!

About the wine

Alicante may not be a name one initially associates with wine, but here, miles away from the balmy Mediterranean resort, in a different world of high altitude, semi-desert scrubland, the estate of Enrique Mendoza is making some of Spain and the world's best Monastrell wines.

The Estrecho 2014 has a wonderful herbal and mineral quality on the nose with aromas of balsamic, pine and rosemary mixing with black and red cherry fruit. Red berries and cherries make a striking presence on the silken, creamy palate which has fine-grained tannins, a focused intensity and refreshing acidity. The finish is very long, fresh and with a mineral, almost saline, quality.

This is high quality indeed and quite rightly recognised as one of the world's best examples of 100% Monastrell.

The wine is named after the vineyard, ‘El Estrecho de Pipa’ which delivers fantastically concentrated, mineral wines. The Monastrell (AKA Mourvedre) grapes are entirely hand-harvested and fermented and aged in 500 litre, French oak barrels.

About the winery

Founded in 1989 by Enrique Mendoza, the property is now run by Enrique’s two sons, Pepe and Julián who have taken the winery to ever greater heights

Located in the Alicante region,  some 45 miles from the coast, the estate is a member of the prestigious Grandes Pagos de España. This group promotes the ‘pago’ concept; a wine produced in a specific terroir that reflects the distinct personality of the soils and climate. There are only 28 wineries who are accredited in this way in Spain.

About the vineyard

“Estrecho de Pipa” is a single vineyard, located in Villena, 700 meters above sea level. The 70 year old vines grow on thin, sandy soils with limited organic matter. The dry-farmed bush vines are farmed organically.

94 Points - Luis Gutierrez
"It has a transparent ruby color and a transparency towards the fine sandy soils with an aristocratic, elegant twist. It feels terribly balanced and harmonious, even if the oak is a little too obvious at the moment and I think the oaking could be fine tuned. But having seen the vineyard and how the older vintages have developed in bottle I have no doubt this will make a superb bottle of Mediterranean Monastrell, even better if you have the patience to wait a year or two. This could very well be the finest Estrecho to date, very much in line with the superb 2010" (Tasted June 2016)

"
A rich and fruity wine showing blackcurrants, cherries and blackberries with floral undertones. Full body and ripe and soft, juicy tannins. The finish is long and fresh. Salty. From 100% monastrell"

16.5+/20 Points - Julia Harding MW
"Deep cherry red...On the nose the oak is more evident in terms of sweet spice, also felt on the palate. But the tannins are as fine as on the 2011, if a little more dense, and the wine is beautifully fluid across the palate, as if it will be ready to drinker at a younger stage than the 2011."

"Definitely my best single Monastrell till now...On the nose dried bilberries, black currants, other blue and black berries, a clear note of oak and whiff of coffee aroma. On the palate almost perfect tannins, med(+) full(-) body, stylish expressive acidity. Very well balanced. Taste opens with red and black berries strewed with ground coffee and maybe with a tiny drop of lemon. Lasting beautiful aftertaste. Superb Monastrell!!!" 4.5/5 Stars

"Med ruby. Bright, vibrant red & black cherry, raspberry, plum, tobacco, bitter chocolate & dried herbs. M+ aroma intensity. Developing w. a touch of wet earth & cured meat. Dry. High alc, full body, high, ripe tannins & freshening m+ acidity. Chocolatey raspberry, cream, vanilla & juicy redcurrant/loganberry. Pepper, liquorice & clove oak. Tasty, interesting m+ finish."  4/5 Stars

"Deep dark ruby robe. Nose is strawberry jam. Palate shows spiciness/pepper, maybe a bit of vanilla or oakiness. Acidity medium, tannins high. Body is medium. Finish is medium+. Very drinkable"  4/5 Stars

"Purple red with violet reflections. On the nose, intense red fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, spices such as pepper, cardamom, and cloves. On the palate, cherry vanilla, cinnamon. Fresh, lively, harmonious. Velvety tannins. Long finish" 5/5 Stars

"...deliciously rich, slightly minerally, gorgeous clarity. Yum"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
