"Some of the most incredible and singular wines in the world." Robert Parker

Guigal make some of the Rhône's greatest wines and with a string of 100 point wines to their name, they continue to go from strength to strength. Critics and Vivino reviewers alike rave about their wines.

And just a taste of this tiny production Saint Joseph will reveal why!

The Saint-Joseph Lieu Dit Blanc comes from the vineyard that gives the appellation its name,  one of the finest sites in the Northern Rhône Valley. With vines of 25-75 years age producing exceptional, concentrated Marsanne fruit, the result is this stunning full-bodied white wine.

Rich, deep and utterly delicious, we think this wine is a serious rival to white Hermitage - a wine that sells for at least twice the price and often more!

At just £35.95 a bottle  and with only about 1000 cases made, this is fantastic value for the quality and will be snapped up quickly...

About the wine

This particular Lieu Dit, with its warm and favourable microclimate, was the epicentre of the AOC when it was first created, almost a century ago

The 2016 St Joseph Blanc Lieu Dit is a straw yellow with golden tints in the glass. On the nose it is aromatically complex and perfumed, with floral notes, Hazlenuts and yellow fruit. On drinking, the wine is rich and full-bodied, a style that suits the Marsanne grape, especially from old vines that give such concentrated, ripe fruit. Waxy and fleshy, soft and concentrated, this is a balanced wine with a supremely enjoyable roundness which is very characteristic of this Saint-Joseph vineyard. This is utterly delicious right now and I can only imagine how good it might become with a couple more years in bottle. It's worth finding out - if you can wait that long!

To make the wine, the grapes are hand-harvested before undergoing temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation at 18°C. The wine is then aged in 50% new oak barrels. 50% barrels that have had one use, before being bottled.

About the winery

The father/son team of Marcel and Philippe Guigal are at the very top of the hierarchy in the Rhône Valley ... their attention to detail and focus on quality is unmatched. I've said it before, and I'll say it again here, this estate is producing some of the most incredible and singular wines in the world." Robert Parker

The finest terroirs of the Northern Rhône in France are synonymous with the Guigal family and acknowledged worldwide for their quality. Wines made here sell for up to £300 on release and are avidly sought by collectors.

The family vineyards encompass Côte Rôtie and Hermitage as well as Saint Joseph and this is the heartland of fine red Syrah, as well as elegant white wines made with Marsanne and Viognier. Grapes have been cultivated on these steep, stony slopes since the time of the Romans, and this family business began in 1946, when Etienne Guigal moved from the well-known Vidal Fleury estate to Ampuis and began to make his own wines.

Eventually, Guigal also acquired this neighbouring business, and also took over the famed Château d’Ampuis, at the heart of Côte Rôtie. This glorious Renaissance building is the company’s flagship, it has a long history dating back to the 12th century. There are now 3 hectares of cellars under this ancient village where wines from all the top appellations of the Rhône Valley lie. In addition to making elegant wines, the family also commission exceptional wine labels: this particular Saint Joseph boasts label art by Swiss artist Roger Pfund, who also designs bank notes!

About the vineyard

Every visitor to this Rhône region of France is visually stunned by its steep escarpments, where vines cling to virtual rockfaces, the large stones seeming to glitter in the harsh sun. The Guigal vineyards are no exception; this Lieu Dit in Saint Joseph has gneiss soil with underlying granite, lending the wines exceptional dark minerality.

Vines here range in age from 25 to a formidable 75 years, dating back to the early days of Guigal. Yield is only 37 precious hectoliters per hectare, hence the production of only 1000 cases per vintage.

About the winemaker

In 2006 Marcel Guigal was awarded the Decanter Man of the Year award for his contribution and dedication to the Rhône.Since the 1980s, Robert Parker has singled out the family for praise, and he is not alone; critics rave about the consistent quality achieved here by father and son team Marcel and Philippe. Between them, they have raised the profile of Syrah (and Viognier) wines from the Northern Rhône to lofty heights, and in the process, made their wines irresistible to collectors all over the world.

94 Points - Joe Czerwinski
"...includes the old-vine fruit from the former Grippat estate...
ripe and honeyed, marked by aromas of toasted grain, then eases into flavors of toasted marshmallow and orange marmalade before gliding to a long, spicy finish. This medium to full-bodied white looks to have the potential to last up to 10 years in bottle"

93-95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
Caramelized peach, flower oil, tropical fruits and hints of oak all emerge from this full-bodied, rich, concentrated beauty that stays focused and crisp on the palate."

93 points - Matt Walls
"A very lively, powerful nose of yellow plum, quince and a touch of mango. It's full-bodied, rich and rounded, with a slightly oily texture and good mineral drive leading onto a long finish. The oak influence is strong but the fruit shines through"

17/20 Points - Richard Hemming
Orange peel, almond and hazelnut, lovely weight and thickness. Low acidity, but enough to keep the structure balanced. Rounded, sophisticated and full of delicious ripe stone fruit."

"What a beauty. The nose smells of calm lilacs and honeysuckle flowers in the breeze. Light whipped cream, white melon, apricot, and peach coat the mouth on the finish. Medium bodied and envelopes the tongue. The fruit retains a delicate finesse. Very little acidity, off-dry, and great structure. Wonderful QPR4.5/5 Stars (previous vintage)

"My favourite St Joseph to date. The house of Guigal is all over this. It's rich, it has attack, it's got bite. The nose is so wonderful, the honeysuckle brings a smile to my face. It's a big wine, but this suits the grape. The palate lasts. Top notch"  4.5/5 Stars (previous vintage)

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
