With just 373 cases made, we are delighted to offer you this ultra-rare Napa Merlot from one of the greatest vintages in living memory.

A succulent, rich and full-bodied beauty that impresses with every sip, the Mt. Brave Merlot is produced from high-altitude (over 1800 ft) vineyards in Napa's much acclaimed Mount Veeder region.

The tiny grapes produced in this beautifully sited vineyard produce wines with concentrated, ripe fruit and superb structure. A balance of power and finesse, the wines are delicious when young but have the ability to age brilliantly.

The 2013 vintage was superb here, even out-classing the great 2012. Robert Parker believes it could be one of the best he has ever tasted!

“2013 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting north coast varietals over the last 37 years... the consistency in quality, depth of flavour, texture, freshness, vibrancy and richness was absolutely mind-boggling" Robert Parker

Normally a wine from Napa this rare and from such a great vintage would cost hundreds of pounds. At £59.75, this classic Napa Merlot is a great deal!

Given its rarity, we only have a few cases to offer, so make sure you don't miss out!

About the wine

“The 2013 growing season was another near perfect year." Chris Carpenter, winemaker at Mt. Brave

Almost black in the glass, the 2013 Mt Brave Merlot opens with fragrant aromas of black cherry, plum, chocolate, sweet spice and floral notes. This is a big, rich, concentrated Napa Merlot that is generous and full-bodied on the palate with ripe blackberry fruit, liquorice, graphite and a savoury, mineral note. The tannins are smooth and velvety and mesh perfectly into the extremely long finish with its hints of vanilla and black pepper spice. This really is a stunner and is delicious now but it will have a beautiful and long life ahead of it.

Merlot always responds well to mountain conditions, with several factors influencing quality. Stony, sparse soils give small crops and tiny, concentrated grapes; the cool diurnal temperatures at altitude prolong the growing season and make for even ripening and being situated above the fog line means the vineyards enjoy more hours of sunshine. Even the difficulty of growing vines on these steep, high slopes enhances quality due to the dedication and investment needed to create great wines.

Winemaking is as simple as possible. Hand harvesting; native yeast fermentation; 20 days of maceration on the grape skins; and 19 months of aging in French oak barrels, 85 percent of them new.

About the winery

Mt. Brave is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of those who settled the rugged terrain of Mt. Veeder during the 1800s and an homage to the Wappo Indians, “the brave ones”, who were the original inhabitants of this extraordinary place.

Mt. Brave is part of Jackson family wines; a family who began with a vision to make great wines from the best wine growing regions of the world. Today they own some 14,000 acres of premium vineyards in California.

The winery was founded in 2007 and produces hugely intense and complex wine from its high-altitude vineyards in the Mayacamas Mountains.

About the vineyard

At an elevation that reaches 1,800 feet, the Mt. Brave vineyard sits above the fog line which allows the vines to bask in the morning sun. Here the soils are sparse and consist of gravelly loam with both large and small rocks. Nutrients and minerals are scant, resulting in tiny berries with concentrated flavours.

The thin soils and high elevation mean winter rains must be captured and vineyard practices must carefully avoid erosion. At harvest time, small lug boxes are carefully moved up and down steep slopes to protect both vines and the workers. The work is hard and labour-intensive.

94 Points - Robert Parker
"The 2013 Merlot exhibits deep mulberry and black cherry fruit, chocolate, cocoa, a good bit of spice, a plump, fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and serious length. This blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Malbec is impressive, but sadly, there are only 373 cases."

94 Points - Wine Enthusiast
"From a site that reaches up to 1,800 feet and dates back grape-growing wise to before the Civil War, this wine is bold and beautiful. It's a study in dusty leather, black pepper and cigar, allowing sauvage, savory aspects to speak louder than fruit. Full bodied and robustly structured, it offers a memorable Tahitian-vanilla note on the finish."

93 Points - Antonio Galloni
"Dark red cherry, plum, iron and smoke all make an appearance in the 2013 Merlot, a wine endowed with tons of Mt. Veeder character. The flavors are bright and punchy throughout. The addition of Malbec adds mid-palate richness and intensity, while hints of white pepper and blood orange add lift. With time in the glass, the Merlot turns a bit darker, but it never abandons that super-classic expression of Veeder that is such a calling card."

"Exquisite. Beautiful savory flavors supported by mountain tannin. Terrific balance and length. Vivid and rich.5/5 Stars

"This bottle was the star of a four-wine Merlot tasting, what with its luscious body, depth and character. While the scrumptious dark fruit is apparent, it does not overwhelm the wine. It provides the steady beat in an ensemble of vanilla, cocoa and licorice. This is a Cab drinker's Merlot. Full-bodied, interesting and very tasty.4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
