"A beautiful wine that should end up being outstanding" Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Finding wine gems is one of life’s great joys and so we are thrilled to be offering this star St Joseph from the spectacular 2015 vintage for just £20.49.

Named one of Decanter's '6 Winemakers to Watch in the Northern Rhône', Natacha Chave is making waves with her perfumed, floral, almost wild Northern Rhône Syrahs that are amongst the best to be found in the appellation.

Her old vines (30-60 years old) are situated in the best area for St Joseph - the steep granite terraces found above the village of Tournon. Such is the competition for vines here that Natacha has just a tiny 1.5 hectare plot.

But boy is it worth it! And in such a vintage as 2015, described by Marcel Guigal as "...surely the vintage of a lifetime. In 55 years, I’ve never seen anything like it.", these perfectly situated old vines really come into their own.

Natacha's 2015 is all about deep, dark fruit - powerful and concentrated, it is a superb example of St Joseph and one that will give pleasure for many years. The only down side is that there is so little to go around!

About the wine

This spectacular syrah wine is made with the lightest touch; only indigenous years, the smallest dose of sulphur and no fining or filtration. It’s an approach that shows Natacha's (justified) confidence in the sheer quality of the grapes she has to work with and the balanced, concentrated wines that they can make, without too much human help!

100% syrah, Natacha explains “it [syrah] expresses itself perfectly, without the need to be blended; offering freshness and interesting minerality.”

The result is very special indeed. There’s concentration but also great complexity and elegance. The tannins are present but perfectly integrated and there’s a lovely freshness too that keeps you coming back for more. Rich, sweet fruit, fine tannins, fresh acidity and an extremely long finish make for a wine that will be delicious whilst young but has the structure and stuffing to age beautifully for the next decade or so.

About the winery

Natacha Chave is sister to prominent winemaker, Yann Chave who inherited his parent’s domaine. Keen to strike out on her own, Natacha identified excellent - if modest in size - vineyard plots in St Joseph and Crozes Hermitage.

Made in very limited quantities, the wines have a cult following and demand is high. As Jeb Dunnuck from The Wine Spectator says, “she makes a perfumed, slightly wild and certainly exotic style of wine that’s loaded with character.”

The name ‘Aléofane’ comes from a book by John MacMillan Brown regarding a fictional island where the word ‘aléofane’ translates as ‘a gem of truth’.

About the vineyard

Natacha owns a tiny, organically-managed 1.5-hectare plot on the slopes above the village of Tournon. These steep granite slopes are where the best St Joseph is made.

94 points, Matt Walls, 2015 Rhône Report
"Fruit from Tournon, grown on granite, all destemmed, mostly large barrels, no new oak. Just-ripe blackberry and savoury damson juice aromas. The juice is concentrated, with a lovely internal beam of refreshing acidity. Long, superbly elegant Saint-Joseph of great finesse and quiet, restrained power"

"
This has fruit to burn, delivering layers of boysenberry, raspberry and blackberry puree, with fleshy depth matched by energetic drive. A graphite edge pushes the finish. The fruit is so enticing now, but this will be better with a little cellaring."

91 Points - Jeb Dunnock

"
A beautiful wine that should end up being outstanding, the 2015 St Joseph offers lots of fresh spring herbs, black raspberry and cassis aromas and flavors, medium to full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and a wonderfully fruity, rounded profile on the palate"

4/5 Stars - John Livingstone-Learmonth

"
The nose gives a compact air of beef stock, prune fruit, is ripe and deep. The palate bears black fruits such as blueberry with cut in the tannins, so the finish is clear and springy. It builds well as it goes, and broadens well near the close. This is rather stately, impressive."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
