One of Tuscany's great cult wineries, Petrolo has amassed a fanatical following whilst managing to keep a suprisingly low profile.

This is all thanks to owner Luca Sanjust, who has always placed absolute quality above self-promotion - and the results show in his wines!

Most well known for their Galatrona (100% Merlot) the estate also produces a superb 100% Sangiovese wine, Bòggina, sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1947.

Bottled from the single best barrel of Sangiovese produced each year, this is seriously rare stuff and as such it gets snapped up by those in the know. With as little as 250 bottles produced in some vintages, it never lasts long!

This is classically pure Sangiovese with aromatic red fruit and a beautifully silky, glossy texture. We can offer just 42 bottles of this incredible wine.

About the wine

Absolutely stunning on the nose with aromas of ripe cherries, blackberry, tobacco and liquorice - every time you come back to it there seems to be something new to discover! This is a very fine wine indeed. Pure, classic Sangiovese. Rich, full-bodied and intense yet silky smooth and with great elegance and restraint. Fine tannins and fresh acidity balance the wine and a long, savoury finish wraps everything up. Drinking extremely well now, this definitely has the quality to age for beautifully for another decade or so.

The grapes are hand harvested and then undergo a further selection on the sorting table before fermentation in glass-lined cement vats for around 14 days. Frequent manual pumping over takes place. Malolactic fermentation is completed in 40 hectolitre French oak barrels, where the wine then ages for 16-18 months, the first 6 months of which are on lees. This process affords the wine greater complexity. After bottling, the wine is left to rest for 6 months before release.

About the winery

This property remains one of Tuscany's most talked about estates. The vibrancy and intensity of the fruit that Luca Sanjust is now getting in his wines, with the assistance of winemaker Simone Cuccoli and consultant Carlo Ferrini, has brought them to the attention of a wider group of people, something they have long deserved.

Petrolo is situated in the area known as the Chianti Colli Aretini, on the eastern flank of the Chianti hills, a historical area delimited in 1716 (when it was the Val d'Arno denomination) by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici, as one of Tuscany's top four wine producing zones. The property covers 272 hectares, of which 31 are vineyards, situated between 250-450 metres above sea level. T

he estate is currently in the process of organic conversion, with certification expected for the 2016 vintage. There are 19 hectares of organically grown olive groves and the rest of the estate is arable land and woods.

About the vineyard

The Bòggina vineyard sits in an extremely favourable position in a beautiful setting, befitting its place at the pinnacle of Petrolo's production.

It is planted to a density of 5,500 vines per hectare and is cordon spur trained. Yields are kept very low, less than 0,8kg per plant, allowing the concentration of all components of the grape.

Petrolo are in the process of gaining organic certification for the site. As such, the moderately loose sandstone and shale soil, so typical of Chianti, is naturally grassed over and regularly mowed, balancing both its vigour and moisture.

Good full red. Knockout nose combines ripe red cherry, dried flowers, licorice and marzipan. Juicy, pure and delineated, with bright acidity giving cut and penetration to the red cherry, raspberry, vanilla and floral flavors. Already delicious and approachable today, but it would be a shame not to be able to follow this wine for at least a few years in bottle. Finishes very long, with fine-grained tannins and building sweetness."

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
