"The sheer class of Austrian wines continues to amaze me" Jancis Robinson

It's not just Jancis! The quality of Austrian wines has got everyone talking.

So when Erich Krutzler, a man synonymous with some of Austria's greatest red wines, marries the daughter of perhaps the most famous Austrian winemaker, FX Pichler, and starts to make Riesling and Gruner Veltliner in some of Austria's greatest vineyards, it's time to sit up and pay attention!

With just 25 (perfectly-sited) hectares and a total production of a mere 5000 cases or so, these are rare wines and are rapidly snapped up by savvy wine collectors who have quickly cottoned on to the excellent wines being produced.

So we are extremely lucky to have found a few cases of their 2015 Riesling from the single-vineyard Kellerberg site - one of the Wachau's greatest vineyards. Rich, complex and mineral, this is a Riesling to compete with the very best that Germany or Alsace can offer.

This really is a must-try for wine aficionados, so please don't miss out - get your order in early!

About the wine

The single vineyard Kellerberg is an absolutely glorious Riesling and testament to the quality that Austria has to offer. Beautifully aromatic, it fills the glass with exciting notes of ripe, juicy apricots, peaches and orange citrus along with touches of fresh apple. and an almost smoky complexity. The palate is rich and intense with a wonderful texture that coats the mouth with more ripe fruit, lime and pepper. This is a wine with a laser-like focus, there's no blowsiness to be found here, just pure fruit, minerality and a long, almost saline-like finish that makes you want to pour another glass...

The extremely steep Kellerberg vineyard is harvested at the end of October or early November. Wine-making is kept as simple as possible to reflect the terroir of the vineyard and the qualities of the vintage. Fermenation and elevage in done in stainless steel on fine lees for about 10 months before the wine is bottled.

About the winery

Both Elisabeth Pichler-Krutzler and her husband Erich Krutzler come from famous wine-making families, so it is no surprise that they ended up setting up their own winery. After several years as wine-maker in his family's great Blaufränkisch vineyard in Südburgenland, Erich then set his sights on helping set up a whole new 50 million euro winery on the site of an old monastery in Slovenia.

In 2006, however, Erich was realising that he was spending far more time commuting in his car than making wine so decided on a new direction that would enable him to spend more time with his wife and new baby daughter. With some help from his father-in-law, the Wachau legend FX Pichler, he and his wife found some vineyards in Wachau and Pichler-Krutzler was born.

About the vineyard

One of the best and most renowned sites in the entirety of the Wachau, the Kellerberg vineyard is southeast facing in a side valley and features a special micro-climate with high temperature differences.

Many of the vines are old and deeply rooted, which along with the poor soil and the micro-climate gives the wines grown here unparalled complexity and minerality.

94 Points - Stephan Reinhardt

Deep, very intense and almost rich on the nose, loaded with minerals and ripe stone-fruit aromas, the 2015 Riesling Kellerberg is a full-bodied, very rich and juicy, intense but also piquant and vibrantly fresh wine full of tropical fruits and power as well as elegance and even finesse. Great grip, fine tannins and an excellent aging potential make this a great dry Kellerberg Riesling."

94 Points - Wine Enthusiast

Stone flint and smoke join a lovely combination of superripe orange and juicy mandarin. The palate focuses even more on these luscious juicy citrus flavors. It gets direction from gentle but definite lemon freshness. With a little air, an earthier aspect grounds this beautifully and gives a three-dimensional picture of aroma, flavor and texture with immense and intense length."

92-93 Points - David Schildknecht

Smoke and piquancy are anticipated on the nose. Lime and white peach inform an oily-rich palate; accents of smoky black tea, iodine, saline and savory shrimp-shell reduction lend intrigue, cut and saliva-inducement on an impressively sustained, infectiously juicy finish. For all of its intrigue, this is also the most generous Riesling of its collection. Fermentation petered out with close to seven grams of sugar remaining, but they are well integrated and supportive of the fruit."

"Refreshing riesling with structure"  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
